Anyone remember owning or driving a beach buggy?
There was something about them that just felt like a South African summer. Hot days, coastal roads, sand in the car and the long way home from the beach.
The Kango arrived on the South African buggy scene in the early ’80s. Built and marketed by Kango Kit Cars, it took the tried-and-tested VW Beetle platform and turned it into a more practical, weather-friendly take on the classic beach buggy.
This one came into Musical Cars needing a little attention, so we got it sorted and back where it belongs.

This MGA was built in 1960.

When it was new, South Africa still used pounds, shillings and pence. The country was still a year away from becoming a republic, and the world of motoring looked very different.

The MGA was MG’s bold move into a new era. Gone was the upright, traditional shape of the earlier MGs, replaced by a low-slung body, sweeping curves and proper open-top sports car proportions.

By 1960, the MGA 1600 was powered by a 1,588 cc B-Series four-cylinder engine producing around 80 bhp. That might sound modest today, but in a lightweight little roadster sitting this close to the ground, outright power was never really the point.

It was about simplicity. A four-speed gearbox (although this one is currently being converted to a five-speed), rear-wheel drive, a tiny windscreen and very little between you and the road.

And 66 years later, it’s still doing exactly what it was built to do.

The late Basil Green is synonymous with some of South Africa’s most iconic performance Fords, but few more so than the Capri Perana V8.

Developed locally and officially sold through Ford dealerships, the Perana became a force on both road and track. In 1970, Bobby Olthoff’s famous Gunston-liveried Capri Perana won an incredible 13 of 14 races in South Africa’s Group 5 series.

It remains the only Ford factory-sanctioned Capri ever fitted with a V8, powered by a 5.0-litre Windsor V8 from the Mustang. With 210kW, 407Nm and a weight of under 1,100kg, it was seriously quick: CAR magazine recorded 0–100km/h in just 6.7 seconds.

Only around 500 road cars were produced, officially available in Bright Yellow or Piri Piri Red.

A proper piece of South African motoring history. And a very cool visitor to the Musical Cars workshop.
