The late Basil Green is synonymous with some of South Africa’s most iconic performance Fords, but few more so than the Capri Perana V8.
Developed locally and officially sold through Ford dealerships, the Perana became a force on both road and track. In 1970, Bobby Olthoff’s famous Gunston-liveried Capri Perana won an incredible 13 of 14 races in South Africa’s Group 5 series.
It remains the only Ford factory-sanctioned Capri ever fitted with a V8, powered by a 5.0-litre Windsor V8 from the Mustang. With 210kW, 407Nm and a weight of under 1,100kg, it was seriously quick: CAR magazine recorded 0–100km/h in just 6.7 seconds.
Only around 500 road cars were produced, officially available in Bright Yellow or Piri Piri Red.
A proper piece of South African motoring history. And a very cool visitor to the Musical Cars workshop.
