๐ง Understanding Oxygen Sensors (O2 Sensors) & Diagnostics ๐โก
โ๐ Sensor 1 (Upstream โ Before Catalytic Converter)
โข Located before the catalytic converter, Sensor 1 is used by the ECU to measure oxygen levels in exhaust gases and adjust the air-fuel mixture in closed-loop mode. ๐
โข Standard zirconia sensors typically oscillate between 0.1V and 0.9V. ๐
โข Wideband sensors operate differently, depending on the manufacturer's specific design. โก
โ๐ฟ Sensor 2 (Downstream โ After Catalytic Converter)
โข Located after the catalytic converter, Sensor 2 monitors converter efficiency. ๐ฏ
โข Its signal remains significantly more stable than Sensor 1 when the converter functions properly. ๐
โข Both sensors feature built-in heater circuitsโpowered and controlled by the ECUโto reach operating temperature quickly. ๐ฅ
โ๐ Proper Diagnostic Steps
โข Verify heater power supply and ground continuity. ๐
โข Inspect circuit integrity and sensor signal output. ๐ ๏ธ
โข Analyze live data streams or oscilloscope waveforms for accurate readings. ๐ป
โโ ๏ธ Important Troubleshooting Note
An O2 sensor DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) does not always mean a bad sensor! ๐จ
Exhaust leaks, rich or poor air-fuel mixtures, misfires, damaged wiring, or a degraded catalytic converter can all trigger false readings. ๐ ๏ธโก
