Not posted anything up for a while as life and work have been side tracking things a little. Things have moved on though but at a slow pace as the syncro was put on the back burner for a while as I was working on a brake and suspension conversion on the cali so we could go on holiday, then a tdi conversion so we could go away again.

The doka is now up and running and I`ll post up some more info on what we had to go through to get to this point.

Finish line is approaching and hope to have the doka sorted by early new year so it can be moted and registered.

The singlecab syncro is also moving slowly forward with a collection of genuine panels being sort and waiting delivery, the other syncro on the ramp will have some more work done next year when the golf that has been living under it finally goes and makes room to work. Although not much work on the vans, parts have been bought and stockpiled so that when work does start there should be minimal delays in progress.

Trying to organise life work balance to make more workshop time so hope to get progress updates out more regular, so more to come soon.

So the good and the bad.

Lets talk briefly about quality of CV`s. I ordered some Meyle CV`s directly from Volkswagen, these were for the front inner driveshafts. Also ordered were GKN joints for the rear driveshafts as these need a little more movement as the van has been lifted.

Ordering from VW you would expect to get a quality joint, but what you actually get is something that cant be used. These also come with a 12 month or 12000 mile warranty, but would not think that they would last 12 months.

There is clear daylight to be seen through both sides of the joint and there is no way a little bit of grease will help in this. I have also posted a video of how much play is in this joint although it is still dry.

Fitted and all greased up I still think the mot man would put these down as worn CV`s as the shaft would rotate in the joint and probably not sound good.

On a positive note the GKN joints are spot on and come in what looks like a heat treated darker colour. The joint is hard to move out the box and even fitted has no daylight and with the driveshaft fitted the right amount of resistance even with grease fitted.

Final note, just because it comes from VW does not always mean it`s the best value for money or quality. It`s not just CV`s that I have had to send back, dont get me started about ball joints. For me CV`s are only going to be GKN.

Started to build the driveshafts and have some pics to share.

I have not finished the front ones as I`ll do a separate post on makes and quality of CV joints that I have recently found.

Was hoping to get all these in next week, but now have to wait for a few more parts to arrive.

I recently stripped down a load of driveshafts to send off for powdercoat and have been going through the old cv`s. I have quite a few front outer units that are good enough to be reused once they are cleaned and re greased.

The front outers have a seal that connects these to the front hubs, but any here know where you can get hold of these seals?

Any help would be gratefully received.

The pile increases of parts to go for powder coat. Also have 2 sets of uprights to strip this weekend and some rear hubs. The more you send the cheaper it all gets so there are some 2wd parts also in the mix.
I just love when it all comes back clean and finally get to work without gloves and getting covered in oil and grease.

I`m often asked how to change the top wishbone bushes on a syncro. I have used a few methods over the years and seen many peoples attempt and failure to get these out easily.

The method I use take a couple of minutes each side and does not damage the arm in anyway. It may not be how VW intended it to be done but it works very well for me.

Also happy to carry out this work for anyone else that maybe feels that they need help with this.

Take a look at the pics on how I do this on this pair before sending these off to be powder coated.
