My dear friends and followers,
long time no see. It doesn't mean we had a break. No, it was the opposite – we were too busy to share all good and bad news. Instead writing one post today I will split the content with pictures by event. And guess what – there were some crazy events. First week we were still fighting with the mold. The epoxy we got on the island has too high viscosity and was very hard to use with the glass fiber. So after the first half of the mold we changed to polyester. In fact I thought it would be even smart to compare epoxy and polyester building big molds. The Vietnamese guy who sold me the polyester knew my project well and he uses this material for boat construction himself every day. When I asked him about a data sheet he lifted up his eyebrows and answered "chút chút" – a little. And he gave me a small bottle hardener. Of course I was testing the pot time, how long it takes to harden. But I didn't check the interactions between the polyester and acrylic 2K paint. To make a long story short: the polyester dissolved all the paint and big bubbles showed up. In the pictures you see the result. It took us one more week to fix this. Believe me I was about to cry. And we started again with polyester since the resin was really easy to use. Nevertheless when we tried the remove the polyester mold from the plug, the plug came out from the epoxy very easy but not from the polyester half. Four guys were hammering, pulling and pressing hard. No way. Next we used hydraulic pumps. No way. Finally we cut out the body piece by piece and still had to use hydraulic pumps. All is well that ends well. The two molds are looking good and we dump the rest. Now we wait for the new (thinner) epoxy and start with the carbon fiber fuselage.
Some other good news I want to share with you folks is our new design. It is not a design only it is a total new concept you will not find in aviation yet. We will fly above the water with one wing only and without any control surfaces like empennage, rudders or flaps. The advantage is very low resistance, means high efficiency. Also you don't see any floats since the wings will work in water and in the air. How cool is that? Ask me more about if you are interested in. By the way - Nick Tsiota was a great help to bring my ideas into the digital world. He did the 3D modeling. Thanks Nick.
We will have a small 1 meter model ready soon to test all the new ideas and new flight maneuvers on water. Be excited to see our first videos.
