🚌 Saigon has a new public transport master plan, and it is ambitious.

The goal for 2026 to 2030: every resident within a 300 to 500 metre walk of a bus stop or metro station. That is roughly 5 to 7 minutes on foot, anywhere in the city.

The plan also covers:

🔋 All intra-city buses running on electric or green energy by 2027, with the full bus and taxi fleet transitioning by 2030

🚏 Smaller feeder buses reaching deep into residential neighbourhoods to connect with metro lines, water buses and bike-share stations

🌙 Night buses, free downtown routes and on-demand transit are under study

🅿️ Cheaper transfers between buses, metro and water taxis, plus reduced parking at transport hubs

One thing to keep in mind: most of this is a plan, not yet reality. Night buses and free routes are being studied, not confirmed. But the direction is clear. The city wants public transport to handle 15 to 20 percent of daily travel by 2030, and around 600 electric buses are already on the road today.

There is a belief that comes up again and again among long-term foreigners in Vietnam. Live here long enough, the thinking goes, and residence or even a passport will follow on its own. It is a comfortable idea. It is also wrong.

Time spent in the country is not a legal route to anything. Years on visa runs, business visas or work permits do not quietly convert into permanent residence, and they do not build toward citizenship in the background. Residence and citizenship each run on their own defined pathways, and being here is not one of them.

The routes that do exist are mostly about connection, not the calendar. Family ties carry real weight, and the rules were widened in 2025 to include spouses, children, parents and now grandparents who are Vietnamese citizens. Nationality can also pass from birth, though where one parent is Vietnamese and the other foreign it depends on the choice the parents made at birth registration, not on residence. Exceptional contribution is its own track. The standard naturalisation path exists too, but it turns on holding permanent residence and residing continuously, not on how many years you have informally lived here.

The point is simple. Plan around the route that actually fits your situation, not around a clock that is not running.

Saigon is about to become a two-airport city, and it is worth knowing what that means before you next fly.

Long Thanh International Airport, about 40 kilometres east of Ho Chi Minh City, opens for commercial flights this December. Under a proposed plan, international flights move across from Tan Son Nhat in three phases.

In the first, from December, airlines may use Long Thanh by choice while Tan Son Nhat carries on as normal.
In the second, from late March 2027, all long-haul and cargo flights transfer to Long Thanh.
By the third, into early 2028, Long Thanh handles nearly all international flights, while Tan Son Nhat keeps domestic and shorter regional routes.

The change brings real gains, more direct long-haul routes and a less crowded Tan Son Nhat, alongside a few growing pains, chiefly the 40 kilometre distance and the need to know which airport is yours during the switch.

Saigon is preparing to open its second international airport.

Long Thanh, located about 40 kilometres east of Ho Chi Minh City in D**g Nai province, is set to begin commercial flights this December under a proposed transition plan. It was built to relieve Tan Son Nhat, which has operated beyond its designed capacity for years.

The change will not happen all at once. Under the proposed roadmap, the handover runs in three phases tied to the international flight schedule, and it stretches into early 2028. From this December, Long Thanh takes on long-haul international routes, all cargo flights, and newly launched international services, while Tan Son Nhat keeps its existing routes for now. Through 2027, more long-haul destinations across Europe, the Americas, Oceania, Africa, the Middle East and South Asia move across. By the end of the roadmap, Long Thanh handles nearly all international flights, while Tan Son Nhat keeps most domestic services and shorter regional routes flown by Vietnamese carriers.

What this means in practice is simple. If you are booking a flight to or from Saigon over the next 18 months, check your arrival and departure airport carefully before you travel. The two airports sit about 40 kilometres apart, so arriving at the wrong one is not a small mistake. A direct express bus between them is planned for the opening, with a metro line expected by 2030.

One of the most common questions we hear from foreign workers in Vietnam is a simple one. Can my family come with me?

The short answer is yes, and the mechanism is worth understanding properly, because a lot of well-meaning advice gets it slightly wrong.

Your work permit is not the document your family travels on. A work permit is a labour paper. What it does is qualify you for a residence status in Vietnam, and it is that status which allows you to sponsor close family members. Your spouse and your children under eighteen can join you under the family category, either on a family visa or on a family temporary residence card.

The family visa is valid up to twelve months. The family residence card is the more comfortable option if you are staying longer, because it runs up to three years and removes the yearly renewal. Its length is tied to your own status and to the remaining validity of the passport.

There are two points people regularly get wrong. The first is parents. A foreign worker cannot sponsor a parent. That route exists only for Vietnamese citizens sponsoring their own family. The second is work. The family category is for residence, not employment. If your spouse intends to work, they will need their own work permit and the matching labour visa, sponsored by an employer.

None of this is difficult once your own status is settled. It is mostly a question of the right documents, in the right order, correctly translated and legalised.

Vietnam is now one of the easiest countries in the region to visit. The e-visa is open to everyone, the whole process is online, and approval arrives without a single trip to an embassy. It is a big reason the country drew more than twenty-two million visitors last year, a record.

Success like that attracts company, and not all of it is welcome. As applications have climbed, so have the websites offering to help with them. Some are middlemen charging a premium for a form you could fill in yourself. Others are worse.

The real thing is genuinely simple. The trouble is telling the official site apart from the copies. Three habits make it easy:

The government fee is 25 USD single entry, 50 USD multiple. Far more than that means you are on a reseller.

The only real portal is run by the Immigration Department. If the web address does not match, close the tab.

You never pay through a personal account or a messaging app. That is the clearest sign of a scam.

A simple tourist visa is a twenty-minute job, and you should keep your money and do it yourself. The ones that catch people out are multiple-entry visas, ninety-day stays, business purposes, and reapplications after a refusal. A small mistake there is one you may only discover at the border.

✈️ Hanoi's Noi Bai International Airport has reorganised its arrivals immigration hall.

From the start of August, Terminal 2 now runs separate lanes by passenger type: VIP, foreign nationals, flight crew, Vietnamese citizens, and transit passengers. Previously most regular-passport travellers queued together, so a single documentation problem could hold up everyone behind it.

For Vietnamese citizens the change has been significant, with average processing falling from around 26 minutes to about 16. Biometric passport holders can also use the automated e-gates.

For foreign arrivals the takeaway is simpler. Join the lane marked for foreign nationals. The Vietnamese and e-gate lanes often move faster and look inviting, but officers will redirect you and you will restart from the back of the queue. The foreigner lanes are signed in English.

Two habits still save the most time. Have your e-visa printout or passport open before you reach the counter. Keep your documents in one place so you are not searching at the booth.

📍 Foreign residents in Da Nang should know what is happening across the city over the coming weeks.

Da Nang has launched a 45-day citywide campaign running into late September, the same model Ho Chi Minh City ran earlier this year. It is broad, and it is not limited to one type of place or one group of people.

The operation is part of a national drive toward drug-free wards and communes, aligned with the wider goal of a drug-free Vietnam by 2030.

Foreign residents are most likely to meet it in three ways. At home, through administrative inspections of apartments, dormitories, guesthouses and rented accommodation, sometimes before dawn. In public, through increased patrols in central areas. And on the road, through rapid testing of ride-hailing, delivery and transport drivers, along with anyone an officer considers to be showing signs of drug use. One early-August apartment inspection alone checked several hundred foreign guests in a single night.

For anyone living here legally and correctly registered, this is a routine compliance check and nothing more. The takeaway is simple. Be ready to show your documents at any time.

Confirm three things now. Your passport, visa or temporary residence card is valid and within reach. Your temporary residence has been declared at your address, which your landlord or building manager is legally required to file. And you know that officers may ask for identification, and during this campaign may request a rapid test.

Correct paperwork turns any check into a short formality.

Vietnam has quietly built one of the more useful tools for foreigners living here, and many residence card holders still do not know it exists.

The VNeID Level 2 electronic identity account is the digital version of your official documents, held in a single government app. Once it is active, it can verify your identity in banking, handle tax transactions, register a rental, declare temporary residence and store your residence card and legal papers in one place. At the airport, a growing number of domestic travellers now pass through with the app and an electronic boarding pass alone, no paper required.

The eligibility rule is simple. Any foreigner aged six or older who holds a valid temporary or permanent residence card can register. That card is the starting point, and without it there is no account.

Registration is free and done in person at an immigration office. You will need your passport and, importantly, a Vietnamese mobile number registered in your own name. Company numbers and unverified SIM cards are rejected, because the number receives your verification code. If your biometrics are already on file, the account can be ready in three working days.

A word of realism. The account is issued on request, not required, and Vietnam is still partway through its digital shift. Many offices continue to ask for original documents, so the app is best treated as a convenience rather than a full replacement. Keep your passport and residence card with you.

The account rewards anyone planning to stay, bank and handle admin here over the long term. The single condition is the one people overlook: you need the residence card first.
