THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT SAPA

Sapa is a lovely hill station town in Northern Vietnam near the Chinese border. The region as also known as “the Tonkinese Alps” and it’s culturally rich with different hill tribe minorities, lush mountain ranges, rice fields and an overall, breathtaking views! Once there, you’ll easily understand what the hype is all about. Shops selling to***co, trekking clothes and souvenir crafts from the hill tribes will help you burn your d**g, but nothing beats a good massage! The town is completely walkable but if you want to explore outside of town, it’s best to do it by motorbike if you can.

1. Getting to Sapa

There is two ways to get to Sapa by overnight train or bus. The train from Hanoi to Lao Cai station takes around 9 hours. After arriving into Lao Cai station, you’ll need to hire a shuttle bus or taxi to Sapa town.

There are sleeper buses that you can book through your hotel from Hanoi to Sapa station. (more information on wikipedia )

2. Roads to Sapa are winding, minibus drivers can be reckless

It takes about one hour to get from Lao Cai to Sapa and the roads wind. Both coming and leaving, there was at least one passenger who got sick. It happens. Cost for this shuttle bus is anywhere from around $2.50-$3.00.

Tip: Bring a plastic bag for emergencies.

3. A room for one can be spacious

So the thing people say about being a solo traveler and having to deal with single supplement fees?.. I finally had to deal with it. All of $3 more. On D Phan Si/Fansipan Road, I was put in the Cat Cat Hotel. My room had a shared outdoor deck, an awesome view and I had three beds all to myself. At night, it was especially romantic with the misty mountains outlined against the night skies and… stars! Check out hotels in Sapa.

My room was clean, I had hot water and after, my horrible hotel in HCMC, it was a definite luxury!

4. Sapa has a problem with touts

“You Buy” and “Buy from me”, you’ll hear on the streets. The Black Hmong women and children are everywhere, stalking tourist hotels to doggedly selling their wares. If you buy from one child, beware… you’ll tempt more children, who want you to patron their products as well. It’s a real problem- the kids come all the way from their villages to sell souvenirs to help support their families and sometimes they sleep in the market or don’t attend school.

Tip: Never answer a tribes person with a “Maybe”, unless you mean it. They’ll follow you until you purchase something. Also, try to be socially responsible with your purchases or gifts. Gifting children with pens can encourage future begging, while giving them sweets is often bad for their teeth.

5. Hide a trekking guide

If you haven’t guessed by reading my Vietnam posts, Sapa Valley is known for its hill tribes and trekking. The hill tribe minorities make up the majority of trekking guides in Sapa. After all, they’re showing you their backyard. In this case, it’s best to hire directly through a hill tribe agency group in Sapa versus your hotel or a Vietnamese trekking agency, as the hill tribe will only get a small fraction of that money.

However, because I didn’t know you could do this, I booked an all-inclusive tour to Sapa in Hanoi. Read my post on How to book a budget tour in Vietnam without getting ripped off! (more on the tours I took in Vietnam).

6. Trekking to villages to requires permits

Some villages will have pay stations at the entrance. You will need to show a permit, which is bought in advance at the tourist information center in town. If you don’t have it upon arrival, you’ll need to go back to town to buy one. If you’re with a trekking tour, it’s likely this is already covered in the fee.

7. Sapa market can be intense

A walk along D Phan Si Road, merges you with Sapa Market, a small fresh market for locals. It isn’t any different from other local markets, selling produce, herbal remedies and meats. The part about this market that gets intense is their meat department. Freshly-killed you’ll find anything from chickens feet, horse legs, even dog. It was enough to give me culture shock with their food.

8. Shopping for Hill Tribe crafts and fabrics

The crafts of the Hmong and Red Dzao tribes are interesting souvenirs to bring back. The Hmong have a certain flair for fashion, while the Dzao lends better to jewelry. There are two main places you can shop for their products

Above Sapa Market are a couple of co-op shops run by the Black Hmong & Red Dzao. There, they sell bags and apparel of genuine quality and pride. The style and outfits that the Hmong wear are stylish for a hill tribe. The casual Hmong wardrobe has layers such as tux-like vests and wrap-around belts, all designed with a folksy flair . I decided to buy a Hmong vest and belt.

9. Variety of food

Sapa has a good selection of international restaurants, cafes and street food to choose from. P Cau May road houses many international food joints, while the street perpendicular and aligning with Sapa Square strings a walkway of Vietnamese street food, where you can sit in the open on plastic chairs on the sidewalk to eat.

The food in Sapa bats eye-to-eye with Hanoi. So far, it’s the best food I’ve had my entire trip! The food was fresh, made with care and well-flavored. Below is my lunch at a cafe. Fresh tomato soup made from scratch. Delicious!

Phong Dien Floating Market is one of 7 busiest floating markets in Mekong River Delta. Phong Dien Floating Market is famous as a place of selling and exchanging goods, a compelling attraction in Mekong Delta. The market is located at the intersection of three rivers, where CanTho River separates from Hau River. The market is about 17 km from Can Tho City to the southeast. This market is usually open at around 4 to 5 am when the sun is rising, and up to7 to 8 am it starts to close.

They are ready to take tourists to visit the floating market. Shipowners are often the locals, thus they should be able to work as "concierge". After sightseeing and shopping at the floating market, tourists can move down to Tra Nien Canal to visit the grave of Bachelor Phan Van Tri, or visit villages, orchards, and immerse in simple but warm life of farmers in Nhon Ai, Nhon Nghia, Tan Thoi, and Truong Lac communes which have been a famous horticultural economic area.

Currently, there are new services in this market such as floating petrol station with a capacity of several thousand liters sold to ships, boats back and forth, machine repair "shops", tailor shops with quick-service for customers. Generally, all items in inland market are presented in the floating market, catering to customers purchasing on the river. In this market, big boats and small boats can anchor anywhere to exchange their goods, while "ghe" - a type of smaller boat, is used as a means of moving trading vehicle to sell fruits and juice to tourists. One of the unique features of boats infloating markets in Mekong Deltain general and in Phong Dien Floating Market in particular is the pillar with products hung on. This pillar is often a part of bamboo tree plugged in front of the boat. The form of promoting and selling products is a unique culture feature only at floating market without noisy and gushy "ad language", but exotic and appealing buyers. They just need look the pillar to find what to buy.

Phong Dien Floating Market is open quite early from dawn, like Cai Rang Floating Market. The period from 7 to 8 am is the busiest time here. However, unlike Cai Rang Floating Market closing at about 9 am, Phong Dien Floating Market remains trading activities until the afternoon, not only exchanging agricultural products, but also supplying domestic tools, working and producing tools... Due to this trait, tourists if miss to visit the market in its busiest moment, they can still drop by here late and enjoy idyllic scenery on the river with boats carrying hoes, machetes or baskets are still trading and ready to serve buyers when needed. Once traveling Can Tho and dropping by Cai Rang Floating Market, you will find a big difference between Cai Rang and Phong Dien floating markets. Not only selling agricultural products, working tools, Phong Dien Floating market also has a gasoline station, department-store boats, mobile tailor "shop", machine repair shop open during the day as markets on the ground, making itself so special and always bring a lot of amazing sense for tourists at any time of the day. Whether markets are located on land or on vast rivers, Phong Dien retains its own characteristics, no matter how time-lapse changes. Today, although roads are developed in remote rural areas of Can Tho City in particular and Mekong River Delta in general, but markets on river still exist, along with follows of water, which brings a unique culture of Mekong River Delta.

2. CAI RANG FLOATING MARKET

Cai Rang Floating Market is one of the most outstanding one in Mekong River Delta. The market is not just a crowsed trading area, but also a unique cultural space in Can Tho. If the Northern Vietnam characterized by colorful fairs of mountainous people, Southern Vietnam has fairs on rivers, known as floating markets. With its unique culture, floating markets are attracting domestic and international tourists in Mekong tours of shopping. Cai Rang Floating Market is the place of exchanging and trading agricultural products, fruits, goods, food as well as an eating area. It is the outstanding attraction in Can Tho.

The name of this market has been existing for a long time, but its origin has not been clear. Legendarily, when this land was being explored, there was a big crocodile coming. Its teeth were plugged into the river's bank, thus, the land was called Cai Rang (means a tooth). In a book related to southern language, Mr. Vuong Hong Sen mentioned that Cai Rang has its origin from Khmer language - "karan" means a molded clay stove. Khmer people made a lot of "karan" and sold them everywhere in this land. Since then, local people pronounced "karan" into Cai Rang. So far, along with Cai Be Floating Market of Tien Giang Province, Cai Rang Floating Market has long been known by domestic and foreign tourists as one of two most famous floating markets in Southwestern Vietnam.

The floating market came into being by the habits and diverse and rich garden products of people living near rivers and canals. There are many ways to exchange goods, but in Mekong River Delta people often use boats as major transport and all trading activities take place on boats. Every boat has a long upright pole at its bow on which samples of the goods for sale are hung. During the early morning market hours, larger sized boats anchor and create lanes that smaller boats weave in and out of. The waterway becomes a maze of hundreds of boats packed with mango, bananas, papaya, pineapple, and even smuggled goods like ci******es. Sellers do not have to cry out about their goods because their goods can be seen in a distance and their cries would not be heard in the vastness of the river and the noise of boat engines. Small boats that sell beer, soft drinks and wine go among the other boats to serve market-goers and visitors. Sellers tie their goods to a tall pole so that buyers can see from a distance what they are selling. Each boat is loaded with plenty of seasonal goods. Activities at the market are also an occasion for tourists to study the cultural aspects of southerners.

Cai Rang Floating Market is located on Cai Rang River, about 6 km from the city center by road, and about 30 minutes by boat from Ninh Kieu Pier. It is open from the early morning to about 8 or 9 am. Tourists often visit this market at about 7 or 8 am which is seen as the best time to drop by here, as this is the most exciting and crowded moment of the market. This market does not open in lunar festive days as the first and second days of the first lunar month, Doan Ngo Festival (the fifth day of the fifth lunar month). Due to the need of marketers, products in this market are various from boats of fruits, agricultural products, to many other types of items and food: Pho, Hu tieu, coffee and small floating restaurants, etc. The boats are usually small ones, creep on the river to serve tourists going shopping and sightseeing. The main and unique feature of Cai Rang Floating Market is the place of selling fruits and specialties of Mekong Delta River. Previously, floating markets were formed due to roads and vehicles on road had not been developed yet, while the need of trading and exchanging goods was high, people had to gather on rivers by boats to do business. Now, in spite of widely developed road transportation, floating markets exist and become more and more bustling.

Cai Rang Floating Market is specialized as a wholesale market of fruits, agricultural products of the region. Goods here are concentrated in a large number. Each item is classified equally in quality and size. If local people and surrounding areas often use middle-size boats, canoes to carry agricultural products to consume here, the big boats are owned by traders to deliver fruit to everywhere, even Cambodia and China. Soaking up in the bustling atmosphere of the special market, you can observe and learn life of many families with several generations living together on boats. There are boat as "mobile apartment" on the river with flower pots, animals, and full interior such as TV, DVD, stereo, and including motorcycle parked on the boat. Not only is the vehicle used to purchase and deliver, but it is also the residence of traders' family. All daily activities take place on boats. The traders will hang their things to sell on a long pillar attached to the boat to invite customers. You will realize what they sell without asking.

Cai Rang Floating Market is one of the most fascinating attractions in Can Tho. This is a very special cultural feature in Mekong Delta, attracting many tourists, especially foreign ones. The skiffs carrying fruits to sell tourists run all their capacity. Small hands of local people give bunches of yellow bananas as if they are moving a beam of sunlight into another boat, accompanied by simple English sentences uttered by sellers, which makes many tourists surprised by the friendliness of the locals. Cai Rang Floating Market is only a few kilometers from Can Tho City. It is quite convenient for tourists to enjoy the cultural life in Hau Giang River. This is the destination of many Mekong tours.
