With all the dirt in this valve cover, my bet says that I'll find a dirty air filter in this Wing. This ones a 2008 with 82k on its ODM. When dirty air gets passed the air filter, and enters the combustion area, as cumbustion occures, some cumbustion gets passed the rings, and as that happens that dirt works like sandpaper on them. Thus this engine will be an early oil burner, and sometimes unexpected issue can arise. For example, as 5th gens age, we are starting to see Wings that come in after having their clutch replaced, but find after that they still have a slipping clutch. Now days our first question is "was the air filter replaced every 12k or sooner?" In the second picture is something I don't recall ever seeing before. Dirt particals that have landed near a valve shim. Can such particals work their way between the shim and the valve bucket which would increase valve opening ... as time goes on, I'm sure we'll see !!! Hopefully the take aways is to follow Honda's Maintance Schedule.

Over the years, repairing coolant leaks on 5th gens, and dealing with their 40+ hose clamps, has changed and evolved. It always starts with a pressure test. Here we do a low pressure test (6-8psi), and a high pressure test (16-18psi), for 4 hours each. The idea is to never change the coolant unless the system passes those test, and here is what we've learned over the years. Where we used to get away with tightning clamps may not work anymore. On this one, tightening the 3-clamps at the 'Y' connector at the back of the engine required clamp replacement. After the clamps are replace, testing starts again.

I just made a parts run to my local Honda dealer. The parts manager said that new unit sales are down, and so are profits. It's a buyers market, because "no one has money to buy anything new." He said it's that way everywhere. He said service, and parts are holding there own. He said that the parts department is used to having a new unit customers buy accessories for their new toy at least 5+ times a week, but now they're lucky for it to happen one time a week. Parts is mainly surving on DIYr parts sales. For service, owners are spending money fixing what they have, because they have no money to buy a new one. I'm not sure if he was refering to just the greater Tampa area, or across the nation. In any case, if you want to buy a new Wing, the advantage is on the side of the buyer.

While running this Wing for about 15-20 mins fopr other reasons on one of our lifts, and turning it off, I relized that it had what looked like and oil. Sorry no picture of the puddle, but probably at least a tbsp. Trying to figure out where it was coming from, I decided to see if the timing cover bolts were tight ... nope, and one was not even finger tight. After tightening and torquing them all, and running again, the leak was still there. So with a mirror, I tried to tell if there was a gasket between the chrome aftermarket cover and the engine case, but was not able to tell. So the cover was removed, and we found the thinest gasket, that was not thick enough to seal out any imperfactions in engine case, and no silicone seal was used across the engine seams. The surfaces where checked, the chrome cover was checked with a straight edge, new lineup dowels were installed and a new gasket too. Of coarse Honda Bond4 was used where there Service Manual says too. The cover was reinstalled, and the bolts properly torqued. Waaa-laaa, after running it another 20mins, no leak :) Now a gasket can be seen. And what's left to do is to clean up all the leaked oil :(

In the last few weeks, we've had to remove look-a-like (knock-offs) heal-toe-shifter. And now we're removing 2 more. FYI ... the common Kury heal-toe shifter with floorboards is expensive, and well made. There set sells for about $500. The nearly identical knock-offs are sold for far less, and are absolutly worthless. Not only are the knock-offs now being installed by trike dealers, they're now being sold where most knock-offs are sold ... Temu, eBay, Amazon, etc !!! The people want are Kury 4038. If they don't come in a Kury box, they are not Kuryakyn !!!

It's nice to get a Thank You letter, and an appreciation check too !!! In this case, Larry was calling becasue he knew he needed a very expensive transmission repair. He was the 3rd owner of an low mileage F6b. Because he had a downshifting issue, I offered some pointer to check first before jumping to that conclusion.

Here at JustWings, help over the phone is free. I expect nothing in return.

Does anyone want this battery. It was damaged in shipping. It's a Yuasa GYZ20L. It tests good. I wouldn't put it in a Wing that someone is intending to keep. It makes for a great test battery, or a Wing that someone might be selling, or for a lawn mower. If so, please stop by and pick it up. Price $0.00. I'll probably keep the brass hardware. GYZ20L's are intended for 5th gen Wings 2012-17, and all 6th gen Wings.
