Antifreeze does two jobs, and most people only think about one. It keeps the coolant from freezing inside the engine on the coldest nights, and it protects the radiator, water pump and heater core from corrosion the rest of the year. Over time it breaks down and loses that protection, even when the reservoir still looks full. A quick test shows how cold yours is protected to. Here's something most drivers don't know about our shop: local body shops send cars to us for their alignments. We run two alignment machines, and setting the angles back to the manufacturer's spec after a collision repair takes the same care as it does on your daily driver. Engines rarely quit all at once. They drift. A rough idle at a stoplight, a stumble when you pull out, a start that takes a beat longer than it used to, or a tank of gas that doesn't go as far as it did in the spring. Each one is easy to live with on its own. Together they usually point to worn spark plugs, tired ignition coils or dirty filters, and cold mornings make all of it more noticeable. It's right next door to the Ranchwood Autoworks shop at 715 S Ranchwood Blvd. Quick l**e service, oil and filter changes and routine fluid checks are handled by ASE Master Technicians, using the engine oil your vehicle calls for. If your car shuts its engine off at red lights, its alternator has a bigger job than most. While the engine's off, the battery keeps the A/C or heater, the radio and the screens running, and the alternator has to put all of that charge back every time you pull away. When the charging side starts slipping, a start-stop car often tells you first: the engine stops shutting off at lights, the dash lights flicker, or the battery light comes on. The technician who did the work verifies it, the work is then checked independently by someone else, and the vehicle is road tested before it comes back to you. It is deliberately more steps than it needs to be. That third step exists so a problem gets found in the shop instead of in your driveway. It runs on every repair, not just the big ones. Yukon Express Care, right next door at 715 S Ranchwood Blvd, handles the quick end of the work: oil and filter changes and routine fluid and maintenance service, with ASE Master Technicians on site. Nobody tests the heater in September, which is exactly why the first cold morning catches so many people out. Weak heat, a defroster that takes forever to clear the glass, or a blower that only works on its highest setting are all small problems right now and all miserable problems in December.
