If you drive a truck, an SUV, or anything with four wheel drive, you have gear oil in places you have probably never thought about.

Front differential. Rear differential. Transfer case.

Those gears carry everything the engine makes and hand it to the wheels. They run in a thick oil that takes real abuse, especially if you tow.

Nobody checks these until they whine. A whine from a differential is not an early warning. It is a late one.

If you tow anything, ask us when yours was last done.

We said earlier this month that we never reuse a rotor. Here is the whole answer, because it is a fair thing to ask.

Manufacturers' thickness of rotors already comes thin. That is not a knock on anybody. It is just how cars get built now.

Machining a used rotor means shaving material off something that did not have much to give in the first place.

So for the safety of our customers, we choose to apply new rotors with every brake job.

It is not a money decision for us. It is the same policy at both shops, and it always has been.

A set of tires is one of the bigger bills on a normal car.

An alignment that is out by a small amount will take a set of tires down to the cords in a fraction of their rated life, and it does it quietly. The car still drives fine.

You find out when somebody points a flashlight at the inside edge.

If you have hit a real pothole, put on new tires, or had any front end work done, get the angles checked. It is the cheapest tire money you will ever spend.

What the Lifetime BG Protection Plan covers, and what it does not.

The plan comes free with a BG service here, and BG backs it. It covers the parts the BG fluid was protecting.

Engine: pistons, rings, bearings, camshafts, the oil pump.
Transmission: the lubricated parts inside the case.
Brakes: the hydraulics. Master cylinder, calipers, valves, the pump.

It does not cover pads, rotors or shoes. Hoses, belts, clamps and seals are wear items, and those are out too.

Ask us for the certificate. We will hand you the whole thing, not a summary.

How to qualify for the Lifetime BG Protection Plan, and how to keep it.

The plan comes free with a BG service here, and BG backs it. What you qualify for depends on your odometer at your first BG service, not today's.

Under 50,000 miles: full coverage.
50,001 to 75,000 miles: half coverage.
Gas engines from 75,001 to 125,000 miles: half coverage.
Half coverage starts 1,000 miles after that first service. The vehicle also has to be under 20 years old at that first service.

To keep it, come back for the service inside its mileage interval. There is a 500 mile grace period built in.

When you get a BG service here, BG covers seven systems on your vehicle. Engine, fuel, transmission, drive line, cooling, power steering and brakes.

It is free. You do not buy it. It comes with the service.

It lasts as long as you own the vehicle, and it transfers to the next owner if you sell.

Coolant is not just antifreeze. It also stops the inside of your cooling system from rusting.

There are additives in there doing that job, and they get used up over time.

When they are gone, the coolant is still green or orange and still full. It just quit protecting. Rust starts building in the radiator and the heater core.

Then one cold morning your heater blows cool air, and that is the first you hear about it.

We are about six weeks from the first cold snap. Good time to have it checked.
