A customer recently brought in their vehicle stating they had just received an oil change elsewhere and now the vehicle was leaking oil. Because it was Saturday and the original shop was closed, they could not take it back.

This is exactly why every job must receive a final inspection before the vehicle is released. Never rely solely on your associates saying, “It’s good to go.” Verify the oil level, inspect the drain plug and oil filter, run the engine, and check carefully for leaks.

If a customer is in a hurry or unwilling to wait for the service to be completed properly, it is better to decline the service than to rush the job and risk poor workmanship, damage, or an unsafe vehicle.

Trust your staff—but inspect their work. One overlooked detail can inconvenience a customer, damage an engine, create a safety concern, and harm the reputation of the entire business. The person who gives the final approval is the last line of defense.
