🔧 Fun Fact: A failing alternator can cause dim headlights, a dead battery, warning lights on the dash, and eventually leave you stranded—even if the battery itself is good!

How it works
Engine spins the rotor
In a car, a belt connected to the engine turns the alternator's rotor.
The rotor is an electromagnet (a coil supplied with a small current).
Rotor creates a rotating magnetic field
As the rotor spins, its magnetic field rotates with it.
Magnetic field cuts through stator windings
Surrounding the rotor is the stator, which contains stationary coils of wire.
The rotating magnetic field passes through these coils.
Electricity is induced
The changing magnetic field induces a voltage in the stator coils.
This produces alternating current (AC).
AC is converted to DC
Most vehicles use direct current (DC).
A set of diodes called a rectifier converts the AC output into DC.
Voltage regulator controls output
The regulator adjusts the rotor's magnetic field strength to keep the output voltage stable (typically around 12–14 V in a car).
Simple analogy

Imagine waving a magnet back and forth through a coil of wire. The moving magnetic field pushes electrons in the wire, creating an electric current. An alternator does the same thing continuously by spinning the magnet.
