What a doozy! Please crawl around those pickups before you buy.
We recently had a Chevy come in for a transmission leak, and when Slim crawled around he found that the gasket between the transfer case and transmission had failed, which is fairly common and an easy fix… but the closer he looked he found some BIG problems. The transfer case was hanging by only 1 stud. Our customer had only purchased this truck a few months previously, and hadn’t put many miles on it since.
We had to deem the pickup unsafe to leave and get some parts ordered. Thankfully we weren’t able to locate any cracks in the transfer case or the rear housing of the transmission, but this case could have been SO MUCH WORSE. We were able to install new studs and get the transfer case safely secured into its home.
While we definitely suggest buying a decent used pickup over the over priced stuff rolling off of the dealership lots, buying a used truck can present its challenges. Make sure to check out everything, and bring up any concerns you see with the seller.
