Who was our famous golfer in yesterday’s trivia question? Immediate past U.S. president William Howard Taft. Founded in 1900, in 1913 the Club relocated and turned to architect Donald J. Ross to design and oversee construction of its golf course. September 29, 1914, was described as a “gala day” with more than 2500 people—including the former President—in attendance. Given that today is National Doughnut Day, did you know that the first Dunkin’ Donuts franchise was in Worcester at the corner of Park Avenue and Mill Street? It was opened in 1955 by Boston lawyer, Morrie Epstein, a friend of William Rosenberg, founder of the Dunkin’ empire. “It gave him a presence in one of New England’s busiest industrial centers,” the T&G reported on the 50th anniversary of the Worcester franchise. Today, the 610 Park Avenue location remains vacant; in 2018 the shop moved to 640 Park Avenue, the new Yatco complex. Rosenberg opened his first coffee and doughnut shop in Quincy in 1948, having cashed in $1,500 in war bonds and borrowing $1,000. In 1950 the name was changed from “Open Kettle” to Dunkin’ Donuts. The company became one of the world’s largest coffee and baked goods chains, with about 5,000 locations in 41 countries in 2002 when Rosenberg died. “I looked around and asked myself, ‘Who was the most successful person in food services at the time.’ ” His role model was Howard Johnson.

This photograph is of the Quincy Dunkin’ Donuts. Worcester Historical Museum does not have a photograph of the early days of 610 Park Avenue. Do you have one (or more) you’d be willing to share with us? Take your place—or Dunkins’—in Worcester history at [email protected].
