Archaeologists uncovered a hidden chamber inside the Domus Aurea, the vast palace built by Nero in the 1st century CE. The room, dating to around 65–68 CE, had remained sealed for nearly 2,000 years.

Nicknamed the “Sphinx Room,” the space features richly preserved wall paintings created with red, green, and yellow pigments. The murals depict a range of figures, including a sphinx, a centaur, the god Pan, animals, and decorative plant motifs.

The chamber has a vaulted ceiling reaching about 4.5 meters in height, though much of the lower section remains filled with earth. It was discovered accidentally during restoration work in a nearby area.

The Domus Aurea once covered a large portion of Rome and included hundreds of rooms, elaborate decorations, and landscaped features. After Nero’s reign, parts of the complex were buried and built over, which helped preserve sections like this chamber.

Finds such as the Sphinx Room provide insight into Roman art and architecture, showing the detailed decorative styles used in elite imperial spaces.
