Painted up this Urn for my customer Chuck Waters from MA that passed on. He was a car guy and worked on the Trident missile project so I incorporated that on a side too. Honored they asked me to do this. He loved my vintage drag racing mask that’s why that was done on the front.

My son Keegan looks forward to the Shad Derby fishing contest in our town every year.
The fishing derby began in 1955 in Windsor, Connecticut as a spring shad fishing contest on the Connecticut River and Farmington River.

But it wasn’t just for fun:
• The organizers (mainly the Windsor Rod & Gun Club) used it to highlight pollution problems in the river.
• At the time, American shad populations were struggling, and public awareness was low.

👉 So the tournament was partly a conservation statement disguised as a contest.

• One of the oldest continuous fishing derbies in New England
• Deep connection to river conservation history
• Strong bank-fishing culture (not just boats)
• Tied directly to a natural event (spring migration), not just a calendar date

🐟 The Fish Itself: American Shad
• Species: American shad
• Migratory (anadromous): lives in the ocean, runs upriver to spawn in spring
• Known as a hard-fighting fish—not prized for eating as much as for sport

Every spring (roughly April–June), thousands move upriver, which is why the derby timing stuck.
