Brannon Claims Sam Crouch Memorial; Burkholder Wins Limited Late Model Thriller at Wi******er
By Josh Fries
WI******ER, VA — The Sam Crouch Memorial highlighted Saturday night’s racing action at Wi******er Speedway, with Allen Brannon capturing the Pure Stock victory, while Randy Burkholder prevailed in a thrilling Limited Late Model feature. Devin Brannon added a victory in the RUSH Crate Late Models, while Randy Linaburg went flag-to-flag in the Hobby Stocks.
The Pure Stocks battled through a caution-filled Sam Crouch Memorial. Fast qualifier Ryan Sager started from the pole and controlled the opening 4 laps before spinning in turns 3 & 4 and collecting eight other cars. When the field reset, Jeremy Morgan inherited the top spot. Morgan would lose the lead to Allen Brannon on lap 14 only before being collected in another multi-car accident that ended his bid for the victory. Jason Wilkins, who started 21st and dodged early race accidents, would restart 2nd. Wilkins challenged Brannon during a caution-free last 12 laps to the finish, but Brannon held him off at the checkered flag to claim the Sam Crouch Memorial, with only nine cars finishing the feature. Trent Holmes finished third, Nathan Broughman fourth and Justin Holmes fifth. Sager set fast time in time trials at 16.953 seconds. Heat race wins went to Sager, Brannon and T. Holmes.
The Limited Late Models produced one of the most thrilling features of the season, with three drivers exchanging the lead and lapped traffic playing a major role in the outcome. Derick Quade controlled the opening 10 laps before Kyle Lear used lap traffic to make his way to the front. Lear remained out front following a restart before Quade battled back to reclaim the lead on lap 19. As the race entered its closing stages, Randy Burkholder joined the fight and reeled in Quade while working the bottom through traffic. Burkholder took command on lap 24, only to become bottled up behind a lapped car, allowing Quade to sweep around the high side and regain the lead on lap 26. Quade held the point through lap 28 before Burkholder fought his way back around to lead the final two circuits, collecting the $2,000 victory by just 0.392 seconds over Quade. Lear finished third, 2026 track champion Gerald Davis fourth and Jonathan Raley fifth. Lear was fastest in time trials at 15.003 seconds, with heat wins going to Lear, Quade and Raley.
In RUSH Crate Late Model competition, Wi******er’s Devin Brannon established himself at the front early and remained in control despite a pair of cautions interrupting the 20-lap contest. Brannon was strong on each restart and went on to take the checkered flag over Austin Yarbrough, who entered the night fresh off a victory at West Virginia Motor Speedway. Jacob Witt finished third, Josh Williams fourth and Bubby Tharp completed the top five. Heat race victories went to Brannon and Yarbrough.
The Hobby Stocks opened feature competition with Randy Linaburg of Wi******er putting together a dominant performance. Linaburg started from the pole and led flag-to-flag, maintaining control through a couple of early cautions before pulling away once the race settled into a long green-flag run. Robert Wilson crossed the line second, followed by Kris Eaton, Walter Crouch and Tyler Fisher. Linaburg and Eaton were the evening’s heat race winners.
Wi******er Speedway returns to action next week with the Modified Mafia battling for $5,000-to-win, along with the Hobby Stock Nationals $1000-to-win and a regular program for the Pure Stocks. Pit gates open at 4PM, grandstands open at 5PM, and hot laps begin at 6:30PM.
