A little piece of Wentworth family history hiding in plain sight in downtown Portland.

Before 1005 W. Burnside became home to the iconic Powell’s City of Books, the building was home to Wentworth & Irwin, our family’s automobile dealership.

The Wentworth family’s transportation business dates back to 1903, and by the mid-20th century Wentworth & Irwin was operating from this building on Portland’s old “Auto Row.” Over the years, the dealership represented American Motors, Nash, Rambler and eventually Chevrolet.

In fact, the building was substantially remodeled by Wentworth & Irwin in the 1950s, helping give it the appearance Oregonians still recognize today.

Wentworth & Irwin continued selling cars here through the 1970s—including AMC Pacers—before closing the West Burnside dealership. Walter and Michael Powell acquired the former dealership, and around 1980 it became the home of what we now know as Powell’s City of Books.

More than a century after our family first entered the transportation business in Oregon, it’s pretty incredible to see a building that was such an important part of our history become one of the most recognizable landmarks in the city.

Our original crew in Portland, Oregon. The company was founded by George G Wentworth (second from right) and Charles G Irwin (far right) back in 1903. The same Wentworth family owns and operates Wentworth's Wilsonville Chevrolet to this day with fifth generation owners Brandon and Doug Wentworth.
