⚠️ ATTENTION MOTOR YACHT OWNERS & CAPTAINS: VOLVO PENTA D8 / IPS-800 ALERT ⚠️
If you are running Volvo D8s with IPS-800 pod drives, read this immediately.
A few days ago, I was offshore delivering a brand-new 2026 hull with less than 100 hours on the engines. We were about an hour out from the slough at Frying Pan Shoals making for Beaufort when the Port engine was abruptly forced into limp mode, requiring an unexpected inshore diversion. The culprit? Total failure of the steering actuator on that Port drive.
Volvo Penta rolled out a major Service Campaign starting on April 26, 2026, specifically targeting steering actuator failures on these setups. Don't wait for a warning light while you're 20 miles out.
Here is the critical operational data you need to know if this failure occurs:
The Helm Indicators Lie: When the actuator fails, the steering/rudder position sensor completely loses track of the pod's physical direction. Your helm screen might show the drive is centered, but the computer is guessing—the indicator is more than likely wrong.
You Still Have Steering, But... While you will likely still have steering control underway via the remaining good drive, close-quarters maneuvering is a completely different story.
The Importance of Manual Centering: If you don't drop down into a hot engine room and physically center that failing pod manually—and leave the steering wheel completely alone after that—the drive will remain stuck at an unknown angle. When it comes time for close maneuvering at the dock using your shifters, the boat more than likely won't do what you expect it to do when you split the sticks.
No Joysticks—Back to Basics: Once that failure occurs, joystick functionality is gone. Owners must be completely competent and familiar with docking the boat the old-fashioned way using only the shifters.
Your Action Items:
Check Your Serial Numbers: Contact your local authorized Volvo Penta service facility immediately. Have them run your specific engine and pod serial numbers to check if your vessel falls under this active campaign.
Brush Up on Manual Overrides & Shifter Techniques: If you haven't practiced dropping into the bilge to manually center your pods, or if you aren't completely comfortable handling your boat in a heavy crosswind using just the shifters, get that training done now before a component failure forces the issue.
REGIONAL TECHNICAL SUPPORT: If you run into issues on the water, you need certified pros who move fast. If you're in North Carolina, reach out to the team at Port Diesel—their rapid diagnostic work on this active campaign bulletin was flawless. If you're running the Chesapeake, Lower Maryland, or Virginia waters, my absolute go-to is Action Master Marine. Keep both numbers in your wheelhouse.
