This is a 2021 Ford Fusion with only 50k miles on it and the owners were told it needed over $1600 in steering repairs.
This long term customer of ours had his car at another local shop for an alignment after they sold him tires. The other shop told him they couldn't do his alignment because the tie rods were seized, not able to be adjusted and needed to be replaced, which they gave him a price of over $1600 to do.
He called us, because he didn't think it seemed right. On top of our price for all 4 tie rods being $650 with premium grade parts, we first scheduled him in to look at the vehicle.
With a couple basic wrenches and less than 5 minutes we had the tie rods all loosened up and spinning just fine.
Yes, they were tight and needing a little extra grunt to get them moving, along with some anti-seize on the threads afterwards.
Were they completely seized and needing replacement for $1600, or even $650? ABSOLUTELY NOT.
We see this all the time from other shops. Small independents to large franchises to dealerships.
If something doesn't seem right on the recommendation and/or the price, get a second opinion.
