Dallman Named Interim Police Chief Following Retirement of Chief Peterson

After more than 28 years of public service, James City County Police Chief Eric Peterson has made the decision to retire.

“I want to thank Chief Peterson for his service and thank his family for supporting him throughout his career. I have enjoyed working with him and appreciate his enthusiasm for serving others,” said County Administrator Scott Stevens.

Assistant Police Chief Anthony G. “Tony” Dallman will serve as interim police chief, effective immediately. Interim Police Chief Dallman has worked for the James City County Police Department since 1995. He started his career in the Uniform Division and after five years as a patrol officer, he was promoted to sergeant, then lieutenant in 2001. He was promoted to major in April 2014 and assistant police chief in June 2022. He spent a total of eight years as a supervisor in the Uniform Division on all three patrol shifts and six years as the Community Services Unit supervisor. Interim Chief Dallman has served in a variety of roles in the Police Department including patrol officer, radar instructor, taser instructor, field training officer, internal affairs investigator and crisis negotiator. Interim Chief Dallman has a bachelor’s degree in Physics from Mary Washington College. He completed his master’s degree in Criminal Justice from Troy University in 2013. He is a graduate of the Professional Executive Leadership School at the University of Richmond and the 257th session of the FBI National Academy.

The County will work with a consultant to conduct the hiring process for a permanent police chief.

FYI

On Friday, July 29 and Friday, August 5, the Williamsburg Police Department will be conducting practical training exercises at Matthew Whaley Elementary School. We wanted to make the public aware of this training as there will be a large police presence in the area and simulated gun fire may be used during the training. School is not in session, and no students or staff will be involved in the training. The MWES parking lot will be blocked off, and the school will be closed to visitors both days.

2021 YPSO DEPUTY OF THE YEAR

Lieutenant Byron Evans is a 28-year veteran of the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office. He has served the community as a jailor, patrol deputy, Investigator, Sergeant, and Lieutenant of the Uniformed Patrol Division and currently serves as the Lieutenant in the Investigations Division. He has also been a member of both the YPSO Emergency Response Team and the Bike Patrol Team.

In addition to the duties incumbent upon the Lieutenant of Investigations, Byron works tirelessly with the Investigators to aid and assist them in progressing their cases. Often times he can be found working late at the office or out attempting to locate suspects and/or witnesses. He has an impeccable reputation as a Law Enforcement Officer, supervisor, and community member. Over the years he has built strong relationships with our citizens.

His commitment to excellence and teamwork, along with his tenured service to the community, makes him a natural selection for our YPSO Deputy of the Year for 2021.
