In 1911, at the first Indianapolis 500, race cars typically carried a driver and a riding mechanic, whose job was to watch for traffic approaching from behind.
But Ray Harroun was driving his Marmon Wasp alone.
So he mounted a mirror above the cowling to see behind him—one of the earliest and most famous uses of a rearview mirror on an automobile.

And then Ray Harroun won the race. 🏁

Bonus Fact: Driving without a riding mechanic also meant less weight in the car—giving Harroun another advantage on the track.

Turns out, sometimes looking backward really is how you get ahead. 😉

n 1959, Volvo engineer Nils Bohlin revolutionized auto safety with the three-point seat belt.

Drawing on his experience designing aircraft ejection seats, Bohlin created a continuous belt that secured both the upper and lower body and could be fastened with one hand.

Remarkably, while Volvo patented the design, they made it available to all automakers for free. They believed an invention capable of saving lives belonged in every car, regardless of the brand.
Bohlin’s design remains the global standard today.

Some ideas truly are too important to keep to yourself. ❤️

Fun fact: Your car horn isn't just making noise—it's actually tuned to a musical note.

In fact, many vehicles use two horns tuned to different pitches—one high and one low—that sound together to create the fuller, unmistakable HONK we all know and... tolerate. 😂

Bonus Fact: Different vehicles use different horn frequencies, which is part of the reason a little compact car may sound very different from a big truck.

So technically, the next time somebody lays on the horn in traffic...
They're just playing their favorite car-tune. 🎶🚗
The appropriate hand gesture is apparently applause. 👏

We've ALL ridden with this person. 😂

In 1936, engineer Ralph Teetor was riding with his friend and patent attorney, Harry Lindsey, when something about Lindsey's driving started getting on his nerves. When Lindsey talked, his speed changed. When he listened, it changed again.
Speed up. Slow down. Speed up. Slow down.

There was one interesting complication: Teetor was blind and couldn't drive himself.
So rather than spend the rest of his life being annoyed from the passenger seat, the engineer did what engineers do:
He invented a solution.

His speed-control technology eventually became what we know today as cruise control.

Bonus Fact: Chrysler first offered Teetor's system in 1958 under the name “Auto-Pilot.” Cadillac began calling the technology “Cruise Control” in 1959—and that name stuck.

“Key Not Detected”? Don’t assume you’re stranded just yet. 🔑

If your key fob battery is dead, your car may still be able to recognize it. Many push-button-start vehicles have a backup way to read the chip inside the fob—even when its battery has no juice.
Try holding the fob directly against the START button while pressing the brake and starting the car normally.
If that doesn’t work, check your owner’s manual. Some vehicles have a specific backup spot where the fob needs to be placed.
And once you’re up and running? Probably a good time for a new fob battery. 😉

Knowing your car is good. Knowing someone who knows your car is better. 💙
