Long weekend ahead, and a couple of local notes before we get to the useful part. Friends University hosts Bethel tomorrow evening, so expect the west-central side to be busier than a normal Saturday.

If you are driving any distance over the next few days, two things are worth a couple of minutes.

Tire pressure, checked cold rather than after driving. Pressure rises as tires heat up, so a reading taken at the end of a trip will tell you everything is fine when it is not. The correct number is on the sticker inside your driver's door, not the number moulded into the tire itself, which is a maximum rather than a recommendation. And look at the spare, because a spare that has been quietly losing air for two years is not a spare, it is a decoration.

Coolant, and specifically its condition rather than the level in the tank. Those are two genuinely different questions. Coolant carries corrosion inhibitors that protect the metal inside your engine, and those additives are consumed as they work whether the level ever drops or not. So it can be full to the line and chemically finished at the same time.

That matters more heading into a Kansas autumn than it does in July, because the same system that has been shedding heat all summer is about to be responsible for your cabin heat.

We are open until five today. Closed Monday for the holiday, back Tuesday morning.

September is an unusual month for a vehicle in Kansas, and it is worth understanding why.

The afternoons are still hot enough that your air conditioning is working properly hard. But the mornings have started dropping, and by the end of the month that gap between seven in the morning and three in the afternoon can be thirty degrees or more.

That swing is the useful part, because temperature change is what exposes things that were quietly marginal all summer.

A battery worn down by summer heat still starts a warm engine easily. Warm oil is thin and the engine turns over with almost no effort. Drop the morning temperature and the engine wants more current from a battery that now has less to give, and that gap is where a no-start lives.

Rubber that hardened and micro-cracked through a hot summer flexes badly when it is cold. A belt that has been quietly ageing announces itself with a squeal on the first cool start and then goes quiet, which is exactly why people write it off.

And a cooling system that was adequate in July has to start doing the opposite job, because the thermostat that has been irrelevant for months now has to actually close and hold heat in.

None of that is dramatic in September. That is the whole point. Every item on that list is a small job right now and an inconvenient one on the first genuinely cold morning, when every shop in Sedgwick County gets the same call.

Myth Buster Friday: you do NOT have to change your oil every 3,000 miles anymore. Many modern engines on synthetic oil go 5,000 to 10,000 miles between changes. The wrong interval either wastes money or risks your engine. All American Automotive will tell you exactly what your car needs. Call (316) 722-1900.

Yesterday's trivia reveal: FALSE. Low coolant is a symptom, not the cause. A leaking hose, a bad water pump, a stuck thermostat, or a failing radiator drained it, and topping off only hides the problem until it overheats again.

A summer of potholes and construction takes a toll on your alignment. The signs are easy to spot once you know them: the car drifts, the wheel sits off-center, or the tires wear unevenly on the edges. An alignment check at All American Automotive protects your tires and smooths the commute. Call (316) 722-1900.
