The Art of the Pass
Passing a commercial vehicle requires more time and space than passing a standard car.
Time your move: On a level highway, it takes 3–5 seconds longer to pass a large truck. Ensure you have enough clearance to return to your lane at least 100 feet before meeting oncoming traffic.
Check the grade:
Uphill: Trucks often lose speed, making them easier to pass.
Downhill: Trucks gain momentum quickly; allow extra distance before attempting to pass.
Clear the mirror: Only move back into the right lane once you can see the entire front of the truck in your rearview mirror. Maintain your speed so the truck driver doesn't have to brake suddenly behind you.
Don't rush: If your exit or turn is coming up soon, stay behind the vehicle rather than trying to pass it.
When a Truck Passes You
Help the driver complete the maneuver safely:
Stay right: Keep to the far side of your lane.
Be predictable: Slightly reduce your speed or maintain it – never speed up while a large vehicle is trying to pass.
Important Safety Reminders
Judging distance: Because of their massive size, commercial vehicles often appear to be traveling slower than they actually are. Many intersection crashes happen because drivers misjudge a truck's speed. When in doubt, wait.
Wind turbulence: When meeting a truck from the opposite direction, stay to the right. Turbulence will naturally push vehicles away from each other; staying right helps you maintain steering control.
