It’s time for "Sign From the ‘70s Saturday".

Each Saturday I’ll post a photo(s) from the Wheaton Historic Preservation Council’s collection of business sign pictures from the 1970s.

I believe the oldest business in Wheaton is Holstein’s Garage at 309 W Front St. It has been operating and family owned since 1906. http://www.holsteinsgarage.com

It began business as Holstein Bros Garage. Edward, Frank, and Emil Holstein are listed as the proprietors in 1925.

Frank Holstein was also an inventor. The November 1, 1906 Wheaton Illinoian reported:
“Frank Holstein, who has been making improvements and procuring patents on a washing machine which will be a Monday Ideal for the housewife, has now a family size on the market. The machines at the Wheaton laundry and county farm are his make. The machine is on display and for sale at Spencer’s.”

The Holstein garages and machine shop were built in 1912 and 1922. Sometime between 1994 and 1998, the east portion(s) of the Holstein buildings were razed for a bank building.
