Falconer 2026

The Falconer Award is given for outstanding achievement by a competitor, administrator or designer in one design racing.

These recipients starting working on a project 5 Years ago. They hatched an idea, formed a Company, and hired a naval architect, an engineering team, a sail designer and contracted with a local boat builder to create a modern, institutional, keel boat for club use.

This endeavor has risk. But these members saw opportunity. In fact, during my plant tour, fulcrum speed works manager, David Clark, explained it was the “complete new design” that convinced him to accept the challenge to build the Storm 18. He mentioned, most boat builders make smaller changes and iterations to preexisting designs, year in and year out, which are easy, but don’t revolutionize much.

The Storm 18 is different. It’s design, and construction materials and techniques, offer a stable, easy to sail, exciting boat that is built like a tank. To get this performance and durability is remarkable. Bill Crane and Karl Ziegler have cracked the code and we are so proud of their contributions to boat building and design.

Essex Yacht Club's first, of eight, Storm 18 arrived at the club and was rigged by their membership. We are on track to have them all out on the water before the twelfth of May!

Storm Marine Group (SMG) today announced that the Darien, Connecticut-based Noroton Yacht Club (NYC) is the latest club to order a fleet of six of SMG's Storm 18 sailboat since the company introduced the boat last year.

Check out Allen Sailing's hardware handbook about spars. Bob Ames designed our Storm 18 spar. It is a bespoke piece designed to meet the needs and demands of our institutional keel boat. Our experience working with Bob, Graham Adams of Allen and Robbie Doyle our sails expert was a truly wonderful experience.

This article illustrates a problem that has been incredibly visible for at least the past 15 years. If our sport is going to survive we all must take the time to consider changes that will reinvigorate recreational sailing. Storm Marine Group was formed with this in mind. Our first product addresses the need for a specific boat to fulfill a need that is becoming more apparent to sailors everywhere. We need products that will open doors for people interested in sailing.
