Fun fact: the three-point seatbelt Volvo invented in 1959 has saved an estimated 375,000 lives in the U.S. alone since 1975. Now Volvo's newest safety innovation — the multi-adaptive safety belt — just earned Newsweek's 'Community Disruptor of the Year' award. Safety isn't a marketing line at Volvo. It's the whole point.

All-new 2027 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport revealed with head-turning design, rewarding features, and smarter tech

Volkswagen of America, Inc. unveiled the all-new 2027 Atlas Cross Sport earlier this month. The second-generation Atlas Cross Sport builds on the success of its predecessor with head-turning design that feels premium inside and out, rewarding features that elevate everyday driving, and advanced technology that inspires confidence behind the wheel. From sophisticated styling and upscale craftsmanship to intuitive connectivity and advanced driver assistance systems, the all-new Atlas Cross Sport delivers a smart premium experience designed for modern life.

The Atlas Cross Sport originally went on sale in 2020 and was part of a doubling-up strategy in the SUV space for Volkswagen. The Cross Sport delivers an emotional, design-led premium approach to the 5-seater midsize SUV space, appealing to couples and empty nesters, without compromising on space and utility. Since its introduction, more than 220,000 have been sold in the U.S.

Compared with the 2027 Atlas 7-seater, the Cross Sport is 5.4 inches shorter at 195.6 in overall, thanks to the dramatically raked coupe-like rear pillars. It is also 2.1 inches lower. Exterior designer William Lee says: “Because the cabin is low and the rear overhang short, it gives the car a really sporty stance. Both the proportions and the use of body color trim elevate its look to the premium class. These chunkier proportions make it look really planted.“

The 2027 Atlas Cross Sport has an even more premium look than the outgoing vehicle thanks to all-new sheet metal and dynamic front and rear lighting. At the front, double stacked LED headlights, a masked upper grille, and a powerful hood combine for a bold and striking face. Double lightlines and an illuminated VW badge are available on all but the base trim, giving the vehicle a unique light signature, particularly at night. Entry models differentiate from the 2027 Atlas by swapping the 7-seater’s piano black accents for bold silver accents to frame the decorative elements of the bumper.

Stronger proportions and sleeker surfacing are seen best in the profile. A dynamic and sharp theme line runs along the upper body sides, bringing solidity to the design and emphasizing the strong fenders that help define the stance. Illuminated door handles puddle lamps with a unique projection pattern are available. All models have body color rocker panels on the lower trims to differentiate from the 2027 Atlas 7-seater.

At the back, the dramatic coupe-like rear pillar and short overhang emphasize the sportiness, while the tailgate now lies flush with the rear bumper for a more upscale look. The cross-body taillight design mirrors the lighting signature in the front, and standard dynamic turn signals with coming/leaving home animations to add an upscale feel.

The designs upgrades are enhanced by new wheels and exterior colors. All trims except the base model receive new aluminum-alloy wheel designs in 20- and 21-inch diameters, with machined alloy and black finishes available; the entry Atlas Cross Sport rides on 18-inch rims. Among three new colors, Dark Sage Metallic was chosen for its sophistication and modernity. The other new colors on Atlas Cross Sport are Blackberry Metallic— new to the VW lineup this year for the 2027 Atlas family—and Sandstone.

Inside, a contemporary upscale aesthetic and premium materials elevate the cabin. A bold loop unifies the cockpit with one strong, architectural statement. High-quality soft-touch surfaces are used throughout, and standard stylish gray wood enhances the modern feel of the cabin. Even the revised door handle location makes the door panels look more premium.

The interior features extensive use of contrasting colors and stitching that is bold and creative. Three interior color palettes are available—an airy pebble grey, moody black, and a medium brown. A black headliner and available olive-green contrast stitching emphasize the sporty nature of the Cross Sport. Leatherette remains standard on the entry trims, while the top two trims offer Varenna leather and Nappa leather respectively.

Sophisticated ambient lighting further enhances the premium feel inside the cabin. A 10-color setup is standard, and the top two trims receive 30 color options; a standard “Atmospheres” feature coordinates lighting and audio settings. On most trims, the ambient lighting flows through the dashboard loop and front footwells. The top two trims add an organic spiral pattern to the dash, which twists and morphs through innovative perforated backlit door panels in the front and rear doors.

All aspects of the interior have been reimagined to enhance the experience for drivers and passengers. Drivers benefit from a revised 12-way ergonomic seat with enhanced 4-way lumbar support on all models. On upper trims, drivers get thigh support and improved full-back massage function for driver and front passenger. As in the outgoing model, a panoramic sunroof is available on most trims. The new 2027 Atlas Cross Sport is built on the upgraded MQB Evo architecture and maintains its spacious interior—particularly the generous trunk space and rear-seat legroom.

New standard features include a power liftgate with Easy Open, rear sunshades, auto-dimming driver-side mirror, dual hatch lights, and front and rear Park Distance Control. The base Atlas Cross Sport upgrades to a 9-speaker audio system, and a 14-speaker Harman Kardon® premium audio system is available on the top trim.

Intuitive tech makes life easier and more enjoyable. The entry trim gets a 12.9-inch free-standing infotainment screen, upgraded to 15 inches on 90% of Atlas Cross Sport models. All models feature Volkswagen’s 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro configurable gauge cluster. A new Driver Experience Dial in the center console controls audio volume, drive modes, and the Atmospheres feature. The console also has room for two cellphones to charge side by side with updated Qi2 wireless charging; 5 USB-C ports are available throughout the vehicle as well.

Beginning in model year 2027, premium connected vehicle services enabled by myVW+ will be bundled together in one in-Vehicle Premium subscription for increased convenience. This includes available features such as:

Premium Navigation that includes Real-Time Traffic and online Points of Interest
Premium Speech that includes generative AI
Premium Radio that allows access to more than 30,000 radio stations and more than 1 million podcasts
Wi-Fi hotspot capability that can connect up to four devices
AirConsole®, which allows you to use the infotainment center as a gaming platform in conjunction with passengers’ smartphones while the vehicle is parked
myQ Connected Garage, which adds remote access to your garage via the in-vehicle touchscreen, Valet Mode on the myVW app, and geo-fencing
The comprehensive package of safety-enhancing and driver assistance features is also improved to further inspire confidence for driver and passengers. A new front center airbag brings the total number of airbags to seven, and the new Atlas Cross Sport features refinements to the standard suite of IQ.DRIVE® driver assistance technology. The Travel Assist feature, which enables semi-automated hands-on driving capability, has been upgraded to allow for driver-initiated lane change, and Emergency Assist Plus can now guide the vehicle to the side of the road if it senses a medical emergency.

The latest version of Park Assist Plus is added to the top trim, while enhanced Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control (pACC) is on the top two trims. When using the available native navigation system and ACC is engaged, pACC adapts vehicle speed based on route guidance. It supports speed adjustment on curves, roundabouts, exit ramps, and speed bumps, primarily on urban and rural roads.

The engine in the Atlas Cross Sport is the most powerful ever fitted to the model. The latest evo5 version of the EA888 turbocharged and direct-injection 2.0-liter four-cylinder TSI® powerplant is essentially an all-new engine employing a variable geometry turbocharger. It now makes 282 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque yet is anticipated to provide better fuel economy despite a 13-hp bump in output over the previous engine.

This engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic® manual shifting. Front-wheel drive is standard, and Volkswagen’s 4Motion® all-wheel-drive system is available across the lineup. A hybrid variant is planned to arrive with the midcycle refresh. Towing capacity remains at 5,000 pounds for models with a factory-installed trailer hitch.

Since the beginning, the Atlas Cross Sport has been proudly assembled alongside the Atlas 7-seater at Volkswagen’s factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where about 4,000 people are employed. The Atlas family is hugely important to Volkswagen’s lineup and currently comprise around a third of Volkswagen’s U.S. sales.

Further details, specifications, and pricing will be announced prior to launch in early 2027.
