We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Herbert Schall, who left us over the weekend at the age of 89.
The word “legend” is often used loosely, but in the world of aviation, Herb truly embodied it. His remarkable career spanned nearly 70 years, beginning with his service in the United States Air Force and continuing through roles at Pratt & Whitney, Signature Aviation, and Aircraft Maintenance Specialist (AMS). As a flight instructor, he taught countless individuals—from U.S. senators and movie stars to everyday enthusiasts—how to fly.
Herb’s impact on AMS cannot be overstated. He was one of our first employees and a foundational figure in the growth and identity of the company. His contributions helped shape AMS into what it is today. In his later years, he became a trusted mentor to a new generation of pilots and mechanics. He was never happier than when sharing his passion for aviation with others.
Above all, Herb was a devoted family man. He spoke often and lovingly of his family, always with a smile. He is survived by his son Mark, his grandson Austin, and his daughter-in-law Eva. While we will deeply miss him, we take comfort in knowing he is now reunited with his beloved wife Echo and his son Greg—watching over us from a place he knew so well: the sky.
RIP Herbert P. Schall
