Pop Quiz:

1) What brake torque is required for an engine at idle?

2) What is the brake efficiency of an engine at idle?

The answers to these two questions largely address some recent claims we've seen online about how best to set an engine up for idle. Only after understanding these two things can we then set our priorities for idle control. As a bonus, they also explain why OEMs use start-stop technology (and engine shutoff for hybrids).

This is the way.

Geoff makes a great point here too. Getting that EO is not always easy. Testing takes resources (time, money, vehicle and lab access). This was just for direct replacement hardware. Adding the complexity of ECU calibration brings lots of new ways to miss the mark on that tight emissions target measurement in that expensive test too. Miss by just a little and you have to do it all over again.

We work with companies to minimize that painful part of the process. We applaud innovative aftermarket companies who are getting it done.

I would like to propose a solution for the massive Canadian infringement upon air quality.

If you own a Tier 3 emissions certified vehicle in the affected area, it is now your duty to go drive around and allow the vehicle to process some of this air. The tailpipe regulations state that your vehicle must emit less than this background sample. Therefore, you would be cleaning the air by driving your ICE vehicle. EVs need not apply.
