Know Your Bus. Ride Your Assigned Bus.

Mid-Prairie students are assigned buses for an important reason: we need to know which students are on each bus so we can account for them in an emergency.

“Bus jumping”—getting on a bus other than your assigned bus without an approved change—is against Mid-Prairie transportation rules. Students cannot switch buses simply to ride with a friend or because they decide on a different plan.

Just like an assigned seat on an airplane, your child’s assigned bus helps keep transportation organized and students accounted for. This is a safety rule, not an effort to be mean or keep friends apart.

Students must have a Change of Plans form completed and approved before riding a bus other than their normal bus. A child telling the driver about a different plan does not replace that process.

Families, we need your support at home. Please make sure your child knows their assigned bus and understands that this rule must be followed every time. If they are unsure, they should ask a school adult before boarding.

Knowing where your child is helps us protect them. Thank you for helping keep every Mid-Prairie student safe!

Stay seated. Wait for the stop. Arrive safely.

We want every Mid-Prairie student safe throughout the entire bus ride—including those last few moments before getting off. Seeing their school, home, or someone waiting can make kids excited, but standing too soon can lead to a fall if the bus brakes or stops unexpectedly.

Please help us reinforce these important habits:

✅ Stay in your assigned seat, facing forward.
✅ Keep your bottom on the seat and your feet out of the aisle.
✅ If your bus has a seat belt, keep it buckled until the bus comes to a complete stop.
✅ Wait for the driver’s directions before getting up to exit.
✅ Walk, use the handrail, and give others space.

A safe ride isn’t finished until our kids are safely off the bus and away from it. Thank you for helping us protect every Mid-Prairie student, every ride! 💛🖤

Their safety is worth slowing down for. 🖤

Every child waiting for a Mid-Prairie bus is someone’s whole world. Getting our students safely to school and home takes all of us—drivers, school staff, students, and families.

Please help us teach and reinforce these important reminders:

🚶 Walk—never run or play around a bus. A bus may begin moving, and students should never assume the driver can see them.

🟡 Stay behind the yellow lines when waiting for the bus at school. Wait until the bus has stopped and staff or the driver directs you to board.

👣 At your bus stop, wait at least 10 big steps back from the road. Stay at least 10 big steps away from the bus until the driver signals you to approach.

✋ Drop something? Leave it and tell the driver. Never chase an item, reach under the bus, or go behind it. Nothing you drop is more important than you.

👀 Before approaching or crossing in front of the bus, make eye contact with the driver and wait for their signal.

Families, please take a few minutes to practice these habits with your children. These small reminders can make a lifesaving difference.

Keeping our Mid-Prairie students safe takes all of us!

Our buses’ warning lights, safety mirrors, and backup alarms help protect students every day. Understanding these features—and teaching children how to respond—helps everyone stay safe.

🟡 Amber lights: Slow down and prepare to stop. Watch carefully for students nearby.

🔴 Red lights: Stop. Never pass a bus that is loading or unloading students.

Safety mirrors: Mirrors help drivers check around the bus, but blind spots remain. Students should stay back and wait for their driver’s signal before approaching or crossing. If something falls near or under the bus, leave it and tell the driver.

Backup alarm: Beeping warns that the bus is backing up. Stay well clear, and never walk behind a school bus.

Parents, please take a few minutes to review these reminders with your child. Remind them to avoid distractions, listen to their driver, and never assume they have been seen.

Mid-Prairie Parents: Let’s Learn About Bus Safety Together!

Our buses have safety features to help protect our Mid-Prairie students—including emergency roof hatches, marked emergency window exits, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits.

These are important safety tools, and students need to understand their purpose. Emergency exits and equipment should never be played with or opened during a normal bus ride. Exit controls can differ between buses, which makes listening to the driver and participating in evacuation drills especially important.

Please take a few minutes to review this poster with your child and reinforce these reminders:

✅ Stay calm and follow the driver’s directions.
✅ Keep aisles and emergency exits clear.
✅ Take safety instruction and evacuation drills seriously.
✅ Alert the driver if someone needs help, and leave emergency equipment alone.
✅ During an evacuation, leave belongings behind, go to the designated safe meeting place, and stay with the group.

Knowing what to do helps students respond calmly and safely. Your support at home helps make those lessons stick!

Mid-Prairie Bus Safety: Built Strong to Help Protect Our Students!

School buses have reinforced frames and roofs designed to help protect passengers, including during a rollover. Those safety features work together with safe riding habits—and our Mid-Prairie students have an important role!

✅ Stay seated, facing forward, with your back against the seat.
✅ Wear your seatbelt correctly whenever your bus is equipped with one.
✅ Keep the aisle clear of backpacks and belongings.
✅ Keep hands, arms, and feet to yourself and inside the bus.
✅ Follow your driver’s directions and remain in your assigned seat.

Parents, please help reinforce these habits at home. Our drivers care about your children, and every reminder about seats and seatbelts has a purpose: keeping students safe on every ride. 💛🖤

Mid-Prairie Bus Safety: Every Seat Has a Purpose!

Some of our buses have seatbelts, and some do not. Iowa’s requirement for three-point lap-and-shoulder seatbelts on all new school buses took effect October 2, 2019. Older buses were not required to be retrofitted, which is why you may see both in our fleet.

School buses have tall, padded seat backs spaced closely together. This protective design is called compartmentalization. The seats help absorb crash forces and protect students who are seated correctly.

On every bus, students need to:

✅ Stay seated with their bottom on the seat and face forward.
✅ Keep their entire body inside the seating area and the aisle clear.
✅ Remain in their assigned seat—no standing, kneeling, or climbing over seats.
✅ Wear their seatbelt correctly for the entire ride when the bus is equipped with one.
✅ Follow their driver’s directions.

Assigned seats are an important part of keeping our buses safe. They help drivers reduce distractions, separate students when needed, and establish a consistent routine. Seating decisions consider the needs of everyone on the bus.

Just like a classroom teacher assigns seats, our bus drivers assign seats in their moving classroom. When your child comes home upset that they cannot sit with a particular friend, we need your support in reinforcing that they must follow their seating assignment.

Just as you support your child’s classroom teacher, please support their teacher in the moving classroom—their bus driver. You are welcome to bring concerns directly to Transportation, but students must follow their assigned seating while those concerns are addressed.

Our regular route buses are moving classrooms without para support. The driver manages students while also watching traffic and safely operating a large vehicle. Staying seated, respecting assigned seats, and following directions help the driver focus on getting everyone home safely.

Keeping our Mid-Prairie students safe—one step at a time!

Have you noticed the yellow crossing arm that extends from the front bumper of our school buses? It serves an important purpose: helping students stay far enough in front of the bus so their driver can see them. Walking too close to the bumper puts children in a blind spot.

Remind your student to:
✅ Walk in front of the crossing arm and stay at least 10 feet in front of the bus.
✅ Make eye contact with the driver and wait for their signal.
✅ Look left, right, and left again before crossing.
✅ Walk—never run—and never cross behind the bus.

The crossing arm is a helpful guide, but the driver’s signal and checking traffic are essential! Thank you for helping our Mid-Prairie students build safe habits every day. 💛🖤
