It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our colleague and friend, Dave Curtis, who left us unexpectedly. Dave served our community with dedication, kindness, and unwavering professionalism. His presence at the courthouse and throughout our agency made a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of working alongside him.

Dave was known for his steady demeanor, willingness to help anyone in need, and his genuine care for the people of Codington County. His loss is deeply felt within our Sheriff’s Office family and the wider community he served so faithfully.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Dave’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Thank you for your years of service, Dave. We will miss you, and we will carry on in your honor.

Trucking company was passing through on I29 and had a trailer malfunction, causing a fire to ensue. South Shore Fire did a fantastic job putting fire out and establishing traffic control along with the SD Highway Patrol and Codington County Sheriff’s office. This 57,000 pound heat exchanger had to be offloaded from the damaged trailer and loaded onto our RGN to get it clear from the lane of travel. Having the right crew, equipment, rigging and preparedness is key to mitigating these highway incidents. Thanks to all involved!

This is what it takes folks. Real life heroes- mostly volunteer, dedicating their days off to sharpen skills that allow them to save you or your loved ones when it matters most. If you have never been exposed to how patient extrication works, look closely. Teamwork, problem solving, determination, and compassion all playing out in front of your eyes in real time. We were fortunate to host the advanced stabilization and extrication course this year, along with instructor Mike Eliason from Aberdeen with funds from the Highway Emergency Responder Training foundation during 2026 SD State Fire School. Great job to those who participated and thank you for what you do for us.
