Here is an example of a loose timing chain on the N20/N26 engine. Keep an eye out for this as it can cause total engine failure if not promptly addressed. The oil pump in this engine is chain driven and built into the timing case. So if and when those guides break or the chain is stretched like this example there is a high chance the engine does not get the correct amount of oil pressure and then it’s gone.

Keeping your BMW operating at peak performance requires staying ahead of predictable wear points that directly impact efficiency, drivability, and engine longevity. Three of the most common issues we see in the shop are direct-injection carbon buildup, leaking oil filter housing gaskets, and torn front control arm bushings. Left unchecked, each of these components will gradually degrade your vehicle's power delivery, fuel economy, and handling dynamics.
Carbon buildup on the intake valves is an inherent side effect of direct-injection engines, where fuel detergents no longer wash over the valve stems. Over time, baked-on oil vapors restrict airflow, leading to rough cold starts, throttle lag, and misfires—a problem easily solved with a proper intake cleaning service. Meanwhile, a leaking oil filter housing gasket is a critical threat rather than a minor fluid drip; leaking oil degrades the serpentine belt directly below it, which can snap and get pulled through the front main seal straight into the oil pan, causing severe engine damage.
On the chassis side, BMW relies on fluid-filled hydraulic control arm bushings to deliver that signature tight, precise steering response. When these bushings tear and leak their fluid, you’ll notice steering wheel shimmy under light braking, sloppy handling, and uneven tire wear. Catching these three maintenance items early is the best way to protect your investment, maintain factory responsiveness, and prevent costly secondary repairs.
