On our most recent cruise, we sailed down the Pamlico River, into the Pungo River, and across Pamlico Sound to Ocracoke; then back across the Sound and up the Neuse River to Oriental; and, returned to Washington via the Neuse River, Bay River and ICW canal, and the Pamlico River.

These are photos from our 10-day inland North Carolina cruise. It took us from Washington down the Pamlico River, to the Pungo River, down the ICW to Oriental, east across Pamlico Sound to Ocracoke, and then back across the sound to the Pungo River and ultimately to the home dock in Washington. The two sound crossings were fabulous, with steady 15-knot NNE wind and gusts to 20 knots. With both we sailed for five hours on a close reach, and had ground speeds of 7.0-7.5 knots, with 3-foot short-period chop on the beam.

Here is an album assembled from the delivery of S/V "Air Time" from Belhaven, NC to Fort Pierce, FL, offshore and via the ICW. Among other wildlife, we saw scores of dolphins and great blue herons, plus bald eagles, an otter and a sea turtle. Coming into Jacksonville, FL harbor we encountered the wake of an enormous container ship, and our vessel got pitched by 10-foot waves. Winds ranged from calm to 30 knots, and temperatures from 28-75 degrees. Quite the adventure.

This unusual view was captured by Cariann Drake on December 30 as the advection fog rolled over the Pamlico River in downtown Washington. This kind of fog is rare--confluence of unseasonably warm air blown over the cold river. Just at that moment, all of the gulls decided to evacuate.
