Hydroplaning (also called aquaplaning) occurs when a vehicle’s tires lose contact with the road and ride on a layer of water. When this happens, the driver can temporarily lose control of steering, braking, and acceleration.

What Causes Hydroplaning

Hydroplaning usually happens when:

Standing water is on the road

Vehicle speed is too high

Tires are worn or have low tread depth

Tire pressure is incorrect

The road surface cannot drain water quickly

When tires cannot push water out from under them fast enough, the water builds up and lifts the tire off the pavement.

Signs You Are Hydroplaning

You may notice:

The steering wheel feels light or loose

The vehicle drifts or slides

The engine may rev higher without speeding up

Brakes may feel unresponsive

What To Do If Your Car Hydroplanes

Stay calm.

Ease off the accelerator slowly.

Do NOT slam on the brakes.

Hold the steering wheel steady and keep the wheels pointed straight.

As the tires regain traction, gently regain control.

How To Prevent Hydroplaning

Slow down in rain.

Keep good tire tread (at least 4/32" is recommended for wet roads).

Maintain proper tire pressure.

Replace worn tires.

Avoid driving through deep puddles or standing water.

Simple Rule

πŸ’§ The faster you drive in water, the more likely hydroplaning becomes.

If you want, I can also explain:

How fast hydroplaning can happen

How tire tread and alignment affect hydroplaning (useful for tire shops)

A simple explanation you could use with customers at a tire shop.
