Yesterday I posted this in reverse to show how easily we can be deceived.
1 John 4:1 — Test Everything Against the Truth
“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.” — KJV
God doesn’t call us to blindly accept every teaching, message, or spiritual claim we hear. He calls us to be discerning. Not everything that sounds biblical is faithful to God’s Word, and not everyone who speaks in the name of God speaks the truth.
Being on guard against deception means staying rooted in Scripture, examining what we are taught, and being willing to seek the truth even when it challenges what we want to believe. We must be careful not to judge truth by popularity, emotion, or the confidence of the person delivering the message, but by whether it aligns with God’s Word and points us toward Jesus Christ.
Don’t simply believe everything you hear. Test it. Search the Scriptures. Hold fast to the truth. Spiritual discernment isn’t about living in suspicion; it’s about being so grounded in God’s Word that we can recognize when something doesn’t line up with it.
