What We Are Actually Looking For in a Technician
Published by Angie at Rog's Auto Inc.
We have been looking for a technician for over a year.
That is long enough that I have thought a lot about what we are actually asking for — and whether we are saying it clearly enough for the right person to recognize themselves in the description.
So let me be specific. Not a job posting. Just the truth about what we are looking for and why it matters to us.
Someone who takes the diagnosis seriously.
The vehicles that come through our door deserve an honest assessment. Not a parts swap until something works. Not a guess dressed up as a repair. We want someone who takes the time to understand what is actually wrong before they touch anything — because that is what our customers deserve and frankly what makes a good technician different from an average one.
Someone who does not need to be managed.
Roger has been doing this since eighth grade. Fred runs a tight, professional shop. Neither of them has time to babysit, and neither of them wants to. If you know your trade, you will have the space to do it. We are not looking for someone to supervise. We are looking for someone to trust.
Someone who respects the customer.
Our customers are neighbors. Farmers. Families who depend on their vehicles to get to work, to get their kids to school, to get through a South Dakota winter. They are not transactions. The person we hire understands that without being told.
Someone who wants Monday through Friday.
We do not do weekends. We do not do on-call emergencies. We offer a schedule that lets you have a life outside the shop — because we believe that makes a better technician, not a worse one. If you have been grinding through dealership weekends and holiday hours, you know exactly what I mean.
Someone who is ready to stay.
We are not looking to fill a seat temporarily. We are looking for the person who fits here, does good work, and wants to build something over time. Roger built his career that way. We hope to find someone who wants the same.
If you read this and thought — that sounds like me — then it probably is.
Call us. Let's talk.
