A few months back this vehicle owner came in for an estimate.
Several weeks later they called and wanted to schedule the repair with Dents Vanish.

Upon first look after the vehicle was brought into the shop, the mess shown in the left photos was seen. This was not there when we estimated the dent several weeks earlier. Once we called the customer they stated they had taken the vehicle to have several other estimates completed in the interim and they determined this was done at one of the shops without their consent.

Unfortunately, Paintless dent repair is not a simple as “any technician can do the same level of work”. This was most likely done because the technician looking at the damage was afraid of the large buckle and wanted to see if the metal would move before committing to a quote. While there are different ways to complete a repair and have the end results be similar, this is not the work of a skilled professional.

Sadly, to correct this mess, the customer paid several hundred dollars more than what was quoted before a shop did this without permission.
We spend quite a bit of time fixing each of the pock-marks before starting where we would have had they not been there. The repair turned out great and the customer was thrilled with our repair.
It is very hard to know who to turn to when your vehicle is damaged.
Dealerships spend millions to keep up the misconception that they are the superior choice. Chain collision centers are complacent and treat you like a number in a long line of faceless insurance claims.

This is another repair we completed last week and a good example of larger dents we can repair without the need for body filler (a.k.a. Bondo) or needing to be refinished. This was a tough situation for the owner as he had Progressive Insurance and they refused to pay for what was necessary to bring our customer’s vehicle back to pre-damaged condition. The customer’s last resort was to have us repair this badly stretched quarter panel as best we could and touch up the areas where the paint had been removed by the collision. We spent around 12 hours on this repair and brought the panel to around 90% of pre-damaged condition. Our customer was happy with this as he did not wish to pay the difference in price from what Progressive issued a check for and what it would have cost to bring the panel to full pre-damage condition (repainting the uniside).

The level of insurance company conflict of interest is at an epic level.
These corporations are not trying to get you to go to one of their “preferred” shops as a way to help you; they are solely interested in saving themselves money at the expense of lower quality parts and workmanship. Consumer beware. Taking your vehicle to a direct repair or preferred shop recommended to you (or flat out told you have to) by your insurance company should be a red flag. When a body shop agrees to use cheap non- oem parts and workmanship for less money than what a quality repair should cost, it’s you who suffers in the end. Choose an independent shop that is up to date on training, technology, and processes and who won’t be afraid to say no to the insurance company.

Today’s vehicles are rapidly evolving, which makes repairs all the more complicated. To be a professional means constantly being vigilant to the manufacturer’s specifications, procedures and practices necessary to properly (and safely) repair customer’s vehicles. Proper training, retraining and certification is an absolute must. It is not ok to be ignorant of proper procedures or rest on laurels of yesteryear. To all who seek out any automotive body repairs: please, ask questions of your prospective repair shop/business/technicians. ‘Do you subscribe to repair procedure publications? Do you use bidirectional scan tools to ensure all connections and removal/installations have been properly carried out? Do you know when to recalibrate Advanced Driver Assistive Systems [A.D.A.S.] after repairs?’

Case in point, a new 2024 Chevrolet Trax came in our shop recently for a minor door dent with paint damage. Part of the repair involved taking the door panel off. One of the crucial aspects of installing the door trim panel back on the door was to ensure the water deflector at the window is securely affixed to the door inner as a loose fitting seal may cause the sensor in the door to not register an impact properly and cause the airbags to malfunction. This would have never been checked had we not subscribed to a repair procedure publication and known exactly what to look for. It is impossible to know everything that is required of every vehicle you work on without it.

Please be aware when selecting a repair professional for your needs: Price shopping is a very strong factor for most, however, the lowest cost will almost always leave you wanting (sometimes further down the road).
The older gentleman technician who has been at it since the early 80s and hasn’t taken a single training course in the past 30 years, who believes it’s ok to drill holes in your roof rails because he is too ignorant to learn how to lift dents from the front of the panel will undoubtably be cheaper.
The guy who went out for 2 weeks of training at the Ding King and comes back deciding he’s now a professional dent guy despite being a used car salesman 3 weeks prior and tells everyone his company has 50 years of experience (between 15 technicians) is undoubtably going to be cheaper.

Every vehicle we estimate is done with the thought in the front of our minds that you are someone’s mother/ father/ son/ daughter etc. and we want you getting home to your loved ones at the end of each commute. Our estimates may include operations others don’t. We aren’t padding the bill. We want to make sure we do everything properly to the manufacturer’s specification so you continue to get home safe and sound. Please ask the questions and ensure your repairer is a true professional and has you and your family’s safety as their biggest concern as well.
