I wanted to take a few moments of your time to discuss modern Automotive paint. Some factory clear coats today can be as thin as 150 microns. 150 Microns is the thickness of a sticky note. In some cases, new vehicles are coming out of the factory with only 50 microns of paint!!! Once that protection is gone, it doesn’t come back without repainting.

Every wash, automatic car wash, harsh winter, UV ray, and contamination slowly wears away your clear coat. That’s when fading, oxidation, swirl marks, and premature aging start showing up. We have talked about how thin modern paint has become, and popular ways to protect it. Now let’s discuss ways to wash it. We do this to prevent rust and corrosion from road salt/grime, maintain its resale value, improve driving safety (clear windows/lights), and preserve its longevity by removing damaging contaminants like bird droppings and bugs, making it essential maintenance, not just for looks. Regular washes protect your investment and keep you and others safer on the road, especially in harsh weather. Listed are several different types of washes as well as some pros, and cons for each.

1.) standard car wash

Pros
- Quick and convenient
- Does a good job cleaning contaminants from the paint.
- Inexpensive
- Does not require you to purchase any car wash products

Cons
- Typically will not do a good pre wash before the cloths rubs against your paint. Increasing the chance of creating swirls and micro scratches.
- Increase chance of hard water spots on your painted surfaces.

2.) touch less wash

Pros
- Inexpensive
- Since its touch less it’s less likely to scratch your paint.
- Does not require you to purchase car wash products.

Cons
- Will not clean your vehicle as well
- Increase chance of hard water spots on your painted surfaces
- Difficult to find this type of car wash

3.) hand car wash

Pros
- Does a great job cleaning your vehicle
- Less likely to cause scratches to you painted surfaces.
- Hand dried to remove most of the water. Making it less likely to receive hard water spots
- Does not require you to purchase car wash products.

Cons
- Much more expensive than a standard car wash
- Hard to find this type of car wash

4.) washing it yourself

Pros
- Less likely to cause scratches
- Wash results are up to you
- Inexpensive after buying wash products

Cons

- Have to purchase supplies such as a bucket, wash soap, wash mitt, and towels.
- Have to dry vehicle quickly before the water evaporates.
- Takes more time to wash it

In conclusion all washing options have their pros and cons. However, the worst option is a standard car wash. Due to higher chances of scratches. You should wash your vehicle every two weeks to remove dirt, salt, and other contaminants.

Hi,
Last week I talked about how thin modern paint has become. This week I want to discuss the options you have to protect, and maximize the longevity of your paint. listed are the best options as well as some of the pros and cons for each.

1.) ceramic spray sealant

Pros:
- easy to apply
- fairly inexpensive
- 6-8 months of protection from UV rays
- makes it easy to wash and remove contaminants from your paint

Cons:
- has to be applied twice a year
- no protection from scratches
- minimal protection from tree sap, bugs, hard water spots

2.) Professional ceramic coating.

Pros:
- 3-5 years of protection
- has scratch resistance properties
- protect from tree sap, bugs, and hard water from embedding into your paint.
- makes cleaning your vehicle much easier
- solid UV protection

Cons:
- fairly expensive
- has to be applied again in 3 to 5 years
- can only be purchased and installed by an authorized detailer

4.) Clear vinyl protection.

Pros:
- 5 + years of protection
- helps protect against scratches
- solid UV protection
- prevents for tree sap, bugs, and hard water spots from embedding into your paint.

Cons:

- very expensive to have installed
- have to add a ceramic coating on top of vinyl to achieve hydrophobic properties
- very difficult/ expensive to remove

Last week I posted information regarding how thin modern paint is getting. Today I put together measurements that demonstrate thickness. This includes the primer, base, and clear coat. It’s scarry how thin its become. If you are planning on keeping your vehicle for longer than 5 years. It’s imperative that you protect your vehicle. In the coming weeks I will post different products and techniques to be able to increase the longevity of your vehicles finish.

When washing your vehicle, make sure to completely dry it. Never let it dry on its own. Regular water has mineral deposits that can permanently etch into your clear coat. Luckly this vehicle had a ceramic coating on it. So, removing the water spots was not a problem.
