This is an example of “less is more."
Working on a 1998 993-generation Carrera 4S—the final evolution of the air-cooled 911—is already a high-stakes environment. Doing so with only 3,000 miles on the odometer elevates it to a preservation effort rather than a standard detail.
The most critical aspect of vintage Porsche care: Paint Thickness Management. Because that clear coat has had nearly 30 years to "outgas" and harden, it becomes brittle. The decision to use a random orbital over a rotary was the right call to manage that heat friction, especially on those iconic, bulging rear fenders where the clear coat is often thinnest at the peaks.

Heat control: By using soft foam and precise arm movement, we avoided pigtails or scouring that can happen when old, hard clear coat meets friction. Headlights and corner taillights were removed to allow for more intricate detailing around their localized edges.
Preserving Edges: On a 911, the "hips" and the rain gutters are notorious "burn zones." Staying conservative with the pad aggression ensured we didn't shave off precious microns of history. In the world of high-end auctions (like Bring a Trailer or RM Sotheby's), a "Paint Meter Reading" report is now standard. By choosing preservation over perfection, Autobella maintained the car's original paint status, which can be the difference of $20,000–$50,000 in valuation for a 993 C4S.
