π Insurance Education Spotlight: What Is Insurance Steering?
Did you know that you have the legal right to choose the repair shop that repairs your vehicle?
Insurance steering occurs when an insurance company or representative attempts to pressure, influence, or direct a customer to use a specific repair facility instead of the shop the customer has chosen.
Examples of steering can include: β’ Telling a customer their repairs may not be guaranteed if they choose another shop. β’ Suggesting the customer will have to pay additional out-of-pocket costs if they choose a different shop when that is not necessarily true. β’ Creating unnecessary delays or obstacles because the customer selected a non-preferred repair facility. β’ Repeatedly encouraging a customer to change repair shops after the customer has already made their choice.
Why Is Steering Illegal?
In many states, insurance regulations prohibit insurers from requiring customers to use a specific repair shop. The reason is simple:
β
The vehicle belongs to the customer.
β
The insurance policy belongs to the customer.
β
The repair shop choice belongs to the customer.
Insurance companies can provide recommendations, but the final decision is always the vehicle owner's.
Know Your Rights
If you've been involved in an accident:
β’ You have the right to select the repair facility of your choice. β’ You can request an estimate from any qualified collision repair shop. β’ You have the right to ask questions and understand the repair process. β’ You should never feel pressured into using a shop you did not choose.
