A deceased whale washed ashore on Silver Strand Beach. Our team recovered it and towed it 30nm offshore where it can decompose naturally, sink, and create a thriving natural ecosystem described in a process called whale fall.

When a whale dies, it eventually sinks to the seafloor, initiating a succession of ecological stages:

Mobile Scavenger Stage (Months to 2 Years): Sleeper sharks, hagfish, and rattails consume the soft tissue, stripping the whale.

Enrichment Opportunist Stage (Up to 2+ Years): Smaller organisms, such as worms, crustaceans, and mollusks, feed on the surrounding organic-rich sediments.

Sulfophilic Stage (Decades): Bacteria break down the lipids (oils) in the bones, releasing hydrogen sulfide, which supports a new food web including specialized bacteria, clams, and tubeworms.

Reef Stage (Long-term): The remaining, cleaned skeleton acts as a hard substrate for suspension feeders.

This whole process creates ecosystems that supply sustenance to deep-sea organisms for decades.

Assisted a capsized catamaran just outside Ventura Harbor. The sailor, who broke his hand during the capsize, had a waterproof VHF radio attached to his life jacket and was able to call for help. Despite the injury, he managed to get back on board and sail the vessel safely into the harbor on his own. It’s always great to see people come prepared with a VHF radio and a life jacket ready to go.
