Well, I can finally say with confidence that the 14 WRX Hatch project is officially over. She was able to get fired up earlier this afternoon after some fresh motor oil, fresh coolant and some MUCH needed OEM Transmission Fluid.

As you can tell, the transmission fluid desperately needed to be changed hundreds, if not thousands, of miles ago. Way before this project happened, 4th gear had a gnarly grind about every other shift, and now I know why; half of 4th gear came out with the transmission drain. About half of the fluid that came out was just a nasty silver/grey and had an absolute disgusting smell to it.

Thank you to for lending me the knowledge I didn’t have during this process, along with all the tricks and tips to get this done. Also a humongous thank you and for getting me most of the parts/fluids I needed quicker than anywhere else would’ve gotten them to me. Last but not least, thank you to my tuner for getting this base map sent out a month ago for this exact point, and continuing to send revisions out for this.

Thank you all for the help and support, and until next project

Couldn’t tell you what day I’m on for this project with all the stuff that keeps on needing replaced.

I already knew the slave cylinder and factory clutch line (slave to hardline) was toast hundreds of miles ago, but Jesus the hardline was just as bad. Trying to remove the hardline from the slave line was pretty much impossible. The nut on hardline going into slave line wasn’t even a nut anymore, it was damn near a perfect circle.

Thankfully, the nut going to master cylinder was in damn perfect condition, so that was easy to remove. Pulled the hardline, slave line and slave cylinder off and replaced with a brand new slave, SS slave line and OEM hardline. As you can tell, the old factory parts were leaking more fluid than an E46-era BMW owned by Conner.

Semi-installed intake manifold as well, getting most of the electrical connectors paired back up and most of the hoses leading to/from intake manifold. Still gotta install the valve cover hoses and get them connected to each other sooner than later. Haven’t bolted the intake manifold down all the way just in case she needs to be removed again (knock on wood).

Despite a few extra days being taken to relax a bit, once I got my bearings back in place I was able to fall back into the groove of things.

Day 4-ish? I think? Of the GR WRX 5MT

Finally got the new / OE replacement clutch kit installed along with a brand new OE replacement flywheel from Exedy. I have to say, the shine on a new pressure plate is gorgeous, though too bad it’s getting tucked away.

After a battle with the stupid engine hoist and chain adjustment, I finally was able to wiggle and slide the engine back against the transmission. Thankful that I’m done with the motor floating around and swiveling back and forth on my while trying to work on it.

Next up is replacing the clutch slave cylinder and clutch like with a brand new OEM slave cylinder and a SS clutch line. Once that’s done, we start reinstalling everything on top of motor, like AC, Power Steering, Alternator, belts, intake manifold. Following that will be brand new OEM valve cover hoses.

If it’s not one thing, it’s another. Just when I thought we’d be getting her done semi-soon, a new flywheel is needed. Previous owner must’ve never drove a manual car before cause the cracking on the flywheel paired with the glazing/wear on clutch disc is something like ive never seen before.

Got a new PCV system installed after every single hose was breaking/brittle, so that on top of new valve cover breather hoses is a pretty damn good purchase. Currently waiting on a flywheel to pair with the / OEM clutch/pressure plate.

Just as I thought I’d be able to load up the tune from , this s**t happens. Oh well, we love and we learn. Just one more step closer until I can tear open an EJ for fun. At least the timing belt was pretty solid though.

Wont be an update on the job until a flywheel shows up, at least not on the main page. Stay tuned on the story for some minor updates/changes.

Day 3.5-ish on the GR WRX 5MT project.

Removed Up-Pipe to gain access to the passenger head for the last SAP plate. All that work for a 25 second plate install… what the f**k subaru. Anyways, SAP is officially deleted, now need to cut out the Baro sensor to keep the tune happy once engine is back in vehicle.

During the entire process, every valve cover PCV breather hose decided to peace out and either break or split at the valve cover, along with the crank case breather breaking at the intake manifold hose and the actual port itself. To say this has been a headache is an understatement, though I’m having the time of my life at the same time.

Huge shoutout to for getting new hoses and an Exedy OE replacement clutch kit on order for me today. Once clutch and hoses are back on, time to reinstall the up-pipe, intake/tgv’s, AC pump, PS pump and get this almost naked long block back into its suit and mated to transmission.

Once engine work is done, slave cylinder and a stainless steel clutch line will be installed along with MOTUL fluid, along with a transmission fluid drain/fill service with OE transmission fluid. Oil change will be done with an OE Subaru filter (AA100) and MOTUL engine oil.

Looking forward to this getting wrapped up so she can hit the road with a fresh tune from .

Day three of the GR WRX Project, making solid progress despite some hiccups.

LH and RH Valve Cover gaskets have been installed along with RTV in proper locations. LH gasket was absolutely shot in the bottom which explains the severe seeping of oil happening. RH gasket was in a little bit better condition, though why only replace one?

Intake manifold was also removed while still attached to the TGV’s, which cleared up A LOT of space for leaning over, looking at other connectors behind, etc etc.

Unfortunately, I’ve hit a hiccup with the RH SAP block off plate. Due to Subaru thinking people with big hands would never work on these cars, I’m being forced to remove the UP from the headers. No big deal, just one extra step that I wish I could’ve avoided. PCV breathers (Valve Cover) are absolutely shot, I didn’t even think about ordering those, so that gave another hiccup. Snapped the crankcase hose as well, which was expected cause every single hose on this engine is rock hard.

Overall feeling pretty solid with it, makes me want to go buy a project GC and tinker on it.

Day two, little less time this evening to get stuff done but hey, still making decent time.

Should be starting the engine removal process tomorrow, but tonight was filled with tight areas where my big hands can hardly fit into. Some nasty knuckle busters also took place, but if you’re not bleeding after working on your car, did you really work on it?

Was able to get the main body harness disconnected, fuel lines disconnected, turbo/downpipe bolts removed, dog bone disconnected, heater core hoses and brake booster hose(s) removed. Should be pretty damn close to getting this H4 pulled out.

Day One of the Engine Removal on a 2014 WRX 5MT Hatch.

Started off a little slow as it’s been awhile since I’ve pulled an EJ, though once I got the first few bolts zipped out, it all came back to me.

Only dedicated about two hours and some change this evening, but was able to get the radiator pulled along with AC compressor, Power Steering Pum, Secondary Air Pump and Alternator all pulled or moved out of the way.

Hoping for tomorrow to be a little more smooth and aiming to get the intake manifold/TGV system pulled out along with coil packs being removed.

Thank you to and , especially and for getting the fluids and other goodies shipped out across the country in a wicked fast time.

Also want to give a shoutout to for making the base map for me while out of state and taking time out of his trip. Truly wouldn’t go to any other tuner

(My previous STi)

The IAG AOS is a crucial piece to make your EJ25 all the more safe. The job of the Air Oil Separator (AOS) is to more efficiently separate oil from the blow-by gasses before they enter the intake tract. This prevents any unwanted oil from going into places where it’s not usually meant to go, causing premature detonation.

This isn’t a necessary piece, but your engine and your wallet will be forever grateful after you install it.

That being said, I offer AOS installation on all EJ based Subarus. Those really being all STi models and GC-GV WRX.

Hello all!! Welcome to SubieWorx541. I started this page 6/25/24 in hopes to further my career and hobby; working on Subarus. I’m not sure when I became obsessed with them or how I did, but the obsession only grows more intense. I currently drive a 2020 Subaru STi that has had some work done to it. I came from a Honda years ago but have had 3 Subarus over my life.

I currently work on Subarus as an actual job, though I want to venture out into bringing the experience home. That is why I made this page; To connect with the local Subaru community in hopes of making my hobby more than that.

I am located in the Eugene/Springfield/Veneta area, hence the “541”. Feel free to reach out via email, instagram DM or Facebook messenger.

Thank you for the opportunity to give back.
