“Certified RV Technician” Doesn’t Always Mean What You Think It Means

There are people entering the RV industry after just a few weeks of training and advertising themselves as “certified RV technicians.” But here’s the part RV owners should understand: in many cases, that certification may primarily cover RV inspections, basic systems checks, and appliance testing. It does not mean someone has years of hands-on experience diagnosing difficult electrical problems, rebuilding damaged roofs, repairing slide systems, tracking down water leaks, troubleshooting furnaces and refrigerators, or dealing with the hundreds of different problems that come through an RV repair shop.

You simply cannot replace years of real-world experience with six weeks in a classroom.

A good RV technician is built through experience — seeing thousands of different problems, making repairs, learning from difficult jobs, understanding how different manufacturers build their units, and knowing what to look for when the obvious answer isn’t the right answer.

Unfortunately, the word “certified” has convinced a lot of RV owners that a short training program automatically makes someone a highly experienced technician. It doesn’t.

Before choosing someone to work on your RV, don’t just ask, “Are you certified?”

Extreme heat can make an RV uncomfortable and potentially dangerous very quickly. Here are a few ways to help keep your RV cooler:

• Park in the shade whenever possible, especially with the refrigerator and largest windows facing away from direct sunlight.
• Keep blinds, curtains, and reflective window coverings closed during the hottest part of the day.
• Run the air conditioner early, before the inside of the RV becomes overheated.
• Clean your air-conditioner filters and make sure the rooftop unit and vents are free of dirt and debris.
• Use fans to circulate cool air throughout the RV.
• Avoid using the oven or stove during peak heat; cook outside when possible.
• Check your shore-power connection, breaker, thermostat, and air conditioner regularly.
• Stay hydrated and pay attention to signs of heat exhaustion.

🚨 Important pet safety reminder: Never leave animals unattended inside an RV during a heat wave. Even when the air conditioner is running, a power outage, tripped breaker, failed thermostat, electrical problem, or air-conditioner failure could cause the temperature inside the RV to rise rapidly.
