Josh Harris (owner and mechanic) has had a love for anything with wheels since before he could walk. He put thousands of miles on an old riding mower in the back yard "driving" (sitting on it and making noises) all over the place as soon as he was old enough to walk. By the time he was 5 he was tearing up the streets of Emory on his Huffy. He drove tractors with his granddad and Uncle David as soo

n as he was tall enough to reach the pedals. As a kid, his dad would let Josh sit in his lap and steer the car. When he was 11, he got his first set of wheels of his own in the form of a go kart. All of this led to a real love for all sorts of vehicles. He has also always had a love for building things and figuring out how things work. His love for creating things was very evident in his love of building things out of his Legos. He would play for hours creating things (mostly cars :D) and playing with them then taking them apart and starting all over again. His mother will testify that figuring out how things worked and were put together was also another thing he often did. Many toys fell victim to his curiosity. They would get taken apart, but unfortunately, they didn't always get put back together. Most of the stuff that fell victim was already broken but not always. His mechanical aptitude comes from years of watching and helping his father work on cars and trucks since he was old enough to walk to the tool box to grab a wrench or screwdriver. His father (who's father was a mechanic) taught him more than anyone could say. He also learned a lot from his granddad and uncles. After he got his driver's license and his own vehicles, he slowly started doing mechanic work on his own vehicles, and as his experience grew, his abilities were put to use on the vehicles of friends and families. For the past 4 years he has worked as a mechanic for a diesel performance shop where he gained valuable experience on many different diesel pickups and attained his ASE certification in Light Vehicle Diesel Engines and also in Automatic Transmission/Transaxles. While he worked there, the work he performed ranged from basic maintenance and mechanic work such as fuel filter changes and replacing injectors all the way to custom performance work such as building transmissions and custom fabricating compound twin turbo systems. All of this together created a person with the skill and passion to do practically anything on a vehicle. Josh takes a tremendous amount of pride in his work, and knows that when he completes a job, he is signing his name to it. He will do whatever he can to make sure every job is done right with no corners cut. Whether it is changing an alternator or building a high performance motor, you can trust that the job will not be taken lightly. You will get the same high level of attention to detail no matter what job you need to be done. With the help of his dad (Paul Harris) he was able to secure a shop space of his own, fill it with tools and equipment, and open a business of his own. Top Notch Garage officially opened it's doors as a full time business on June 5th, 2013. We look forward to growing the business and creating a relationship with our customers that is based on mutual trust and respect. If there is anything we can do to help you with any of your automotive needs, feel free to contact us.

UCC 2021 day 1 is in the books. It was a looooong week leading up to this, but we made it and did a respectable job for the knife we brought to this gun fight. I’m super proud of all the guys on our team and thankful for Ryan Batts for letting us be part of it with him. We battled a few issues early on and ended the day with a best pass of 6.028@114 mph and are shown to be in 12th place right now. We were so close to a 5, but it just wasn’t meant to be this weekend. I’m ready to get on the dyno and sled pull. It has been an adventure for sure.

We want to give a big congratulations to our good friend and customer, Richard Coker, for winning Diesel Power Magazine’s 2019 Diesel Power Challenge. We are honored you wanted us to help you build your truck and chose us to be part of your team as you competed against a strong field of fierce competitors. It was a lot of fun, and we can’t wait to do it again next year. Our hats are off to the rest of the competitors we had the privilege of meeting this past week. You are all wonderful ambassadors for the diesel industry, and we look forward to seeing you all at future events. If we can ever do anything to help you, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We aren’t the biggest shop out there by any means, but we love to work with people who share the same love of performance and competition that we have. We would also like to say that KJ and his team did an outstanding job of running the event. With the amount of people, facilities, and events that had to be coordinated, everything ran exceptionally smooth. We look forward to seeing you all next year.

Josh Chambers has been working his tail off this week and doing an amazing job integrating this LBZ/4L85E out of an ‘06 van into this ‘86 square body dually. What can we do for you?

What a wild weekend! A good friend/customer, Ryan Batts, and I loaded up our trucks Friday afternoon in preparation for the NHRDA World Finals at the Texas Motorplex. We decided to make a pit stop at the new Xtreme Raceway Park in Ferris for some test and tune on their 1/8 mile track. Unfortunately it started raining before we could get any passes. We cruised on down the road to Ennis and dropped off our trucks and trailers and headed back into town to grab some dinner and get some sleep. We woke up early and got to the track just in time to watch it rain. Around noon we decided to head into Waxahachie for lunch. While sitting in the restaurant toward the end of our meal we kept hearing alerts going off on all the phones around us. I found out on Facebook that there was a tornado in Waxahachie. After finishing lunch and walking outside, we hear the sirens going off. Thinking we are moving away from the danger, we decide to head back to the track. We arrive at the Motorplex to see a mass exodus trying to avoid another tornado headed there. We decide we don’t want to hang around there either, so I message Allen Hickerson to see if he’s home. He says yes, so we head 20 miles south to Corsicana once again thinking we are avoiding danger. Wrong! We aren’t there 5 minutes when Allen’s wife comes out to the shop to inform us there is yet another tornado headed toward us and that we should get inside the house just in case. The storm comes and goes with no sign that we can see of a tornado anywhere in our immediate vicinity. Once it blows over, we visit with Allen for a little while, and while we are there, we discover that they have decided to postpone the race until Sunday. We decided we needed a speed and competition fix, so we went to Caddo Mills and race some go karts on a damp track. It was fun sliding around and getting made fools out of by the semi professional teen and preteen kart racers that were out there for their year end award ceremony. Sunday we showed up even earlier because we didn’t want to get there too late and miss the start since they were going to be pushing to get the race off before anymore weather came in. Ryan made a startling discovery that his fuel cell appeared to be more water than diesel. We drained and flushed the tank and filters with clean diesel and used some additive to help dissipate anything that may have been left behind. We went into the first and only round of qualifying, and I managed to pull off a 12.01 pass on an 11.90 index. Ryan ended up throwing the serpentine belt and only running a 12.6 with almost no fuel rail pressure due to being a single CP3 with no lift pump (belt driven MITUSA). We got the belt back on between rounds and went back to the lanes for the first round of qualifying. I ended up pushing through the brakes in staging for a red light loss, the first time I ever remember doing that. Ryan got lucky with a solo pass due to a broken competitor. I told him to run it all the way out so we could see what the truck would do on the smallest tune we had loaded. It ended up running a 10.18 @ 134 mph! With me being out, I was able to watch some racing and cheer on Ryan to a second place overall finish in the 10.90 index class. I will have to say I will not soon forget this weekend. I can’t wait to get back out there next year.

We took a chance with the weather and went out to Pine Valley Raceway yesterday for the Diesel Thunder Summer Extravaganza in Lufkin, TX with our 2wd shorty shop truck and Richard Coker’s built motor LBZ. Unfortunately for us, the rain didn’t hold off long enough to get much racing done, but we both got one pass down the track, and we were both able to get some good numbers on the dyno. My pass in the shop truck was not too good due to a severe lack of traction, but Richard was able to put down a 6.76 @ 104 mph on a 6.70 index with a very repeatable 1.64 60’ time. He was also able to put down 1199 hp at the tire on the dyno, and the shop truck managed to put down 907 with a new setup we just got going last week. Since Facebook won’t allow me to post multiple videos or pictures and videos together for some reason, the videos will be posted in the comments.

So sort of going along with the post from earlier today, here is a little video from our trip to Ennis last night. The truck in the foreground is the one that left on a trailer this morning, and the truck next to it is The Shop Truck with me driving. Both of us were trying a bit too hard on this pass, but the previous pass I made earlier in the night resulted in the first 10 second pass ever for that little 2wd truck. I hope you enjoy the video. I’m also attaching a picture of the 10 second time slip in the comments.

This looooooong term project is finally nearing the end of its journey to completion. Richard Coker decided to take it home to Midland with him to do a little prep work for a small race out this way next weekend, but we took it out to the Motorplex in Ennis last night to do a little test and tune. We still have some tweaking to do, but with a thrown belt, a blown intercooler boot, and a terrible launch, it managed to trap 131 mph on a moderately aggressive tune. I feel pretty confident it has a 9 in it once we get the suspension and tuning all dialed in. The truck is going to be a lot of fun on the street too. I can’t wait to see what it is actually capable of.

We had this 2007 Dodge brought to us due to a popping noise from the front suspension and no ac. We got him fixed up with all new MOOG Parts balljoints, wheel hubs, and trac bar. We also installed the updated steering linkages from Dodge, and their Mopar performance dual steering stabilizer kit.

Lorenzo out at SoCal diesel just emailed us these pics of a motor they are finishing up for a customer of ours. It is going to be a monster in a ‘95 Chevy 3/4 ton pickup rolling on an ‘05 single wheel 3500 frame. It has all the good stuff in the motor that will be topped off with a set of 200% over injectors and an S485/467 compound turbo setup. I can’t wait to see it run.
