What happened in this video we dug into this 2011 ram and discovered why this job had to be done twice

01/09/2026

WHAT HAPPENED?! 👀

A lot has changed lately… and this weekend we finally went to get a 2011 Ram 1500 that’s been sitting for a while after it broke down shortly after a supposed lifter and cam repair.

New city. New chapter. And a whole lot to figure out. 🔧

Let’s see what actually happened…

🔧 Famous last words of a mechanic: “While I’m here…”

Welcome to Part 2 of the Silverado project—and, as usual, this job has grown a little bigger than originally planned.

Since we were already this far into the engine, we decided to go ahead and re-ring the pistons. Everything was moving along until one of the brand-new rings broke before we ever even tried to install it.

That meant waiting another day for parts.

Then we said those dangerous words again:

“While I’m here…”

We decided to replace the rear wheel bearings and seals too. Unfortunately, the bearing we were sent was incorrect—and after spending about six hours getting it back out, we’re now waiting on more parts to finish the rear end.

The good news is the engine is going back together, and we should have it assembled today.

Stay tuned for Part 3, where we’ll fire this truck up, get it back on the road, reveal how many hours the entire project actually took—and finally share our big announcement.

Be sure to like, follow, and tell me in the comments:

What is the biggest “while I’m here” project you’ve ever gotten yourself into?

🚨 It’s finally happening…

I’m finally tearing into my own 2016 Chevrolet Silverado.

This truck has low compression on cylinders 3 and 5, and all signs are pointing toward camshaft and lifter failure. Instead of putting it back together with the factory DOD setup, I’m upgrading it with a non-DOD camshaft, LS7-style lifters, and the supporting components needed to eliminate the system properly.

Now the real question:

⏱️ How long do you think this job will take me from start to finish?

The book time is 26.6 hours, but I already have my own number in mind. Drop your guess in the comments before the teardown begins!

This will be a three-part video series, and I’ll show you what I find once we get inside the engine. There will also be a special announcement at the end of this project, so be sure to like, follow, and stay tuned for Part 2.

Is your car battery turbocharged? 😂

This little fan may look like a tiny electric turbo, but it’s actually mounted to the battery tray on this 2022 Honda Odyssey.

Its job is to help manage the temperature around the regular 12-volt battery—but when this little three-wire fan shorts out, it can cause a much bigger problem. It can pull down the vehicle’s communication network and create a complete lack of communication with multiple modules.

All of that trouble from a part most people would never even know existed.

If your vehicle has warning lights, electrical problems, communication codes, or something just isn’t acting right, give us a call. We’re always happy to have a conversation, answer your questions, and help get you on the schedule.

❄️ Why is A/C repair so expensive on modern vehicles?

It’s a question we hear all the time, and the answer isn’t as simple as “parts cost more.”

Today’s A/C systems use advanced variable displacement compressors, extremely small passages inside condensers and evaporators, and complex components that are far less forgiving when something fails. When a compressor starts coming apart internally, metal debris can contaminate the entire system, which often means more than just replacing one part.

In this video, I explain:
🔧 Why modern A/C systems fail differently than older ones.
🔧 Why a proper repair often requires flushing or replacing multiple components.
🔧 Why that DIY recharge can from the parts store usually isn’t the complete solution.
🔧 Why proper diagnosis can actually save you money in the long run.

Modern vehicles are incredible machines—but they’re also more complex than ever before. Our job is to help you keep yours reliable without wasting money on unnecessary repairs.

If your A/C isn’t keeping up, give us a call. We’d be happy to diagnose it correctly the first time.

🚗 Even after a major repair, cars can still surprise you.

A few weeks ago we replaced the engine in this Jeep Patriot and documented the process along the way—from the engine replacement to the CV axle repairs. Today, while getting it ready for its next home, we installed new front brake pads and took it on a test drive.

Everything drove perfectly… until we got back to the shop.

I caught that familiar sweet coolant smell under the hood. A quick inspection showed a few drops underneath, so we pressure tested the cooling system and removed the front bumper cover for a better look. Sure enough, the radiator core had developed a leak on the passenger side.

It’s a good reminder that automobiles are mechanical machines. Even after major repairs, unexpected failures can happen—and that’s true even for us as technicians. The important part is catching problems early before they become much bigger (and much more expensive).

We’ll be replacing the radiator so this Jeep is ready for its next owner.

Also, May and our youngest daughter, Lily, made another appearance today! ❤️ May was in the office building an estimate for a Tesla 12-volt battery replacement, so there’s a good chance we’ll have some Tesla content coming soon.

And if you’d like to see more of May in our videos… help us find great homes for the last three kittens! 🐱 Once they’re adopted, she’ll be able to spend more time at the shop.

If you need maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, or just some honest automotive advice, give us a call. We’d love to help.

Another busy day in the shop! 🔧

Today I gave an update on the Land Rover we’ve been repairing. I showed the failed coolant crossover pipe, explained why these parts commonly fail, where it’s located, and what all has to come apart to replace it. It’s definitely not one of the easier jobs, but we’re getting very close to having everything back together. Before final assembly, we’ll bleed the cooling system, perform our testing, and verify the repair before reinstalling the remaining cowl and splash shields.

I also talked about something that’s becoming more common with newer luxury vehicles. Clearing fault codes isn’t always as simple as plugging in a basic code reader. Many modern vehicles require the proper professional scan tools and procedures, and using the wrong equipment can create additional issues. That’s why it’s important to have these vehicles diagnosed with the correct equipment.

We also finished up a 2003 Toyota Camry today. I still love seeing these older Camrys come through the shop—they’re some of the most reliable vehicles Toyota ever built. This one came in with a brake pulsation caused by warped front brake rotors. While it was here, we also repaired a leaking valve cover gasket and transmission cooler line leaks to help keep it reliable for many more miles.

As of right now, tomorrow’s schedule is still open! If your vehicle needs repairs, maintenance, diagnostics, an oil change, A/C service, or anything in between, give us a call and get on the schedule.

We also specialize in GM LS and Chrysler HEMI camshaft and lifter repairs.

📞 We’d love the opportunity to earn your business!

Another busy day in the shop! 💪

The 2003 Silverado has definitely kept us on our toes. We ended up tearing the A/C system apart three separate times because we kept finding metal contamination. Even after multiple flushes, we determined the condenser was likely still holding debris, so we worked with our supplier, exchanged parts, and installed a different condenser. The truck is now cooling much better, and we’re about to take it on a final road test to make sure everything is working as it should before calling the job complete.

I also talked about something many people don’t realize: vehicle components wear out with age. Even when an A/C system is repaired correctly, a 23-year-old truck may not cool exactly like it did when it was brand new. Foam seals inside the HVAC box deteriorate over time, which can allow a little heat bleed from the heater core and reduce overall efficiency. As long as the system is keeping the customer comfortable, there’s usually no reason to tear the entire dash apart just to replace those seals.

We also received the parts for the Land Rover. We’ll be replacing the infamous rear coolant crossover pipe on the supercharged V6—if you’ve owned one of these, you probably already know exactly which repair I’m talking about!

We also wrapped up an oil change and A/C recharge on a Ford Expedition, so that one is heading home today as well.

Thankfully, I won’t be working until 8:00 tonight! 😄 Once we finish the final road test and get a few vehicles delivered, it’s time to head home.

If your vehicle needs maintenance, diagnostics, A/C service, or repairs, give us a call. We’d be happy to get you on the schedule or even answer any questions you may have.

Technology keeps changing, and so do the tools it takes to properly diagnose today’s vehicles.

Today we wrapped up a 2018 Land Rover Discovery that came in with an SRS (airbag) warning light. Newer vehicles like this use a communication system called DoIP (Diagnostics over Internet Protocol), which requires specialized diagnostic equipment and procedures. In this case, even our professional scan tool had to be connected directly to the vehicle’s communication interface to properly access the modules.

After performing a complete diagnosis, we traced the fault to the passenger-side seat-mounted airbag circuit. Fortunately, the issue turned out to be a poor electrical connection at the seat connector. After inspecting and reconnecting the terminals, the fault cleared and did not return—no parts were needed.

One thing to remember is that modern vehicles are far more complex than they used to be. Even something as simple as a dead battery or improperly communicating with a vehicle can create additional problems if the correct procedures aren’t followed. That’s why proper diagnostics have become more important than ever.

Whether you drive a Land Rover, Chevrolet, Ford, or another make, we’re equipped to diagnose and repair today’s vehicles the right way.

If your vehicle has a warning light on or needs maintenance or repairs, give us a call and get on the schedule!
