Most people come to Cocoa Beach for the ocean. Not many know there's a whole other ecosystem sitting just behind it.
The Thousand Islands is a network of mangrove islands and waterways that runs through the Banana River Lagoon — one of the most productive coastal ecosystems in Florida. The mangrove roots create natural shelter for juvenile fish, stingrays, and all kinds of marine life. Roseate spoonbills, ospreys, and great blue herons work the shallows. Dolphins move through on their own schedule.
That's what two hours on our tour looks like. No scripted microphone speech — just a local guide, a small group, and whatever the lagoon has going on that day.
