When purchasing a used reach stacker or container handler, the asking price is only part of the equation.

A machine might look like a great deal on paper, but what happens when you factor in its service history, hydraulic condition, boom wear, spreader functionality, parts availability, and potential downtime?

In container-handling operations, the real cost of equipment is measured in more than dollars. It’s measured in uptime.

Before making an investment, consider:
🔹 Engine & Transmission: What does the maintenance history tell you?
🔹 Hydraulic Systems: Are there signs of leaks, pressure issues, or component wear?
🔹 Boom & Spreader: Have the structural components, locking mechanisms, and wear points been properly inspected?
🔹 Parts & Serviceability: Can you support the machine when repairs are needed?
🔹 Application Fit: Is the equipment actually configured for your container weights, stacking heights, and operating conditions?

At Forklift Exchange, Matthew Heffernan (https://www.linkedin.com/preload/?_bprMode=vanilla #) works with customers nationwide to help identify reach stackers, empty and loaded container handlers, and heavy container-handling equipment suited to their operations.

Because buying the right machine today can help prevent expensive problems tomorrow.

Looking to purchase, replace, or upgrade your container-handling equipment? Give Heff a call.

Hurricane precautions start before the storm—and continue after the water recedes.

For marina owners and operators, preparing your forklift early can help protect equipment and support a safer reopening.

Before the storm:
• Move the forklift to solid, elevated ground while conditions are safe.
• Lower the unloaded forks, set the parking brake, shut down, and remove the key.
• Have authorized personnel follow manufacturer procedures for battery handling.

After suspected flood exposure:
• Do not start, charge, or operate the forklift.
• Keep it out of service and document visible damage from a safe location.
• Arrange a qualified inspection before restarting or moving it.

A dry exterior or an oil change alone does not establish that a flooded forklift is safe to operate.

Forklift Exchange can help coordinate inspections, repairs, transport, and replacement options as safe access and availability allow.

A repossessed or off-lease forklift doesn't always arrive neatly at a warehouse ready to sell.

Sometimes it's:
500 miles away.
Not running.
Missing information.
Taking up someone else's space.
And needs to be gone yesterday.

For a bank or equipment finance company, that's when a simple lease return can quickly become an asset-management problem.

Forklift Exchange can help coordinate the pieces:
IDENTIFY IT — Determine exactly what equipment you have and its specifications.
INSPECT IT — Document condition and identify potential issues.
MOVE IT — Coordinate transportation from the customer or recovery location.
STORE IT — Provide a solution when the asset needs somewhere to go.
SELL IT — Use material-handling market knowledge and buyer relationships to determine the right remarketing path.

The value isn't just having someone willing to buy a forklift.

It's having one call that can help solve the entire problem.

KEEP THIS NUMBER IN YOUR BACK POCKET.

If you work in equipment finance, banking, leasing, or asset management, you don't necessarily need a forklift expert every day.

But when you do, you usually need one quickly.

A lease return shows up that isn't what you expected.

A repossessed forklift is sitting at a customer location and needs to be moved.

You inherit a mixed fleet and aren't sure what you actually have.

A specialized piece of material handling equipment doesn't fit the typical auction route.

You need help with inspection, valuation, transportation, storage, repair, resale, remarketing, or complete asset disposition.

That's where Forklift Exchange can be a pretty valuable number to have in your back pocket.

We're not limited to one brand, one equipment category, or one solution. With decades of material handling experience, an extensive equipment network, service capabilities, logistics resources, and experience buying and selling equipment across a wide range of capacities and applications, we can help figure out the next move - even when the situation isn't straightforward.

You don't have to have the answer. You just need to know who to call.
Keep Nick in your back pocket.

WHEN COIL HANDLING STOPS, PRODUCTION FEELS IT.

In can manufacturing and aluminum processing, specialized material handling equipment isn't simply moving material from Point A to Point B.

It's helping keep the production process moving.

Think about what happens when the truck responsible for moving aluminum beverage coils suddenly goes down.

Coils don't reach production.
Material begins backing up.
Operators are waiting.
Production schedules can quickly be affected.

And when you're dealing with a specialized high-capacity coil handler or coil ram truck, finding an immediate replacement isn't always as simple as calling the nearest rental company.

That's why having a plan for critical equipment matters.

Understanding the condition of your current equipment, knowing what replacement options are available, and identifying potential backup equipment before an unexpected failure can help reduce the impact of downtime.

After more than 30 years in material handling, Nick Marshall understands the demands of can plants, aluminum facilities, and specialized coil-handling operations and how important the right equipment can be to keeping production moving.

Don't wait for a critical coil truck to go down before figuring out Plan B.
Planning an equipment replacement, adding capacity, or looking for a backup coil-handling solution?

Talk to Nick.

DID YOU KNOW? 💡

The capacity listed on a forklift’s data plate isn’t necessarily the amount it can lift in every application.

A forklift’s rated capacity is based on specific conditions, including a defined load center. Change the size, shape, or position of the load, and the truck’s effective lifting capacity can change.

Add an attachment, extend the load farther from the carriage, or handle an unusually long or oversized load, and the application may require a different capacity than the load weight alone would suggest.

That’s especially important when handling:
⚙️ Dies & molds
⚙️ Machinery & CNC equipment
⚙️ Heavy castings
⚙️ Steel and aluminum products
⚙️ Large industrial components

The load may weigh 20,000 lbs. - but that doesn’t automatically mean a 20,000-lb. forklift is the right truck.

Understanding the load, load center, attachment, lift height, and operating environment helps determine the right equipment for the job.

With more than 30 years in the material handling industry, Nick Marshall has worked with specialized and high-capacity applications across a wide range of industries.

Have an unusual load or application? Talk to Nick.

A 30-Ton Coil Doesn’t Automatically Mean You Need a 30-Ton Lift Truck.

When specifying equipment for coil handling, coil weight is only the beginning of the conversation.

In can manufacturing, aluminum processing, steel service centers, and other coil-handling environments, several factors determine how a lift truck needs to be configured:

⚙️ Coil Weight & Dimensions
The weight, outside diameter, inside diameter, and width of the coil all affect the application.

⚙️ Load Center
Where the weight of the coil sits in relation to the truck can significantly affect required capacity. Two coils of the same weight can create very different demands on a lift truck.

⚙️ Ram Length & Diameter
A properly configured coil ram needs to match the coil ID and provide the necessary support while maintaining appropriate clearance for loading and unloading.

⚙️ Lift Height & Storage Method
Picking coils from the floor, racks, saddles, or processing equipment can require very different mast and capacity configurations.

⚙️ Operating Environment
Indoor manufacturing facilities often have restricted aisles and limited maneuvering space. This is where a high-capacity compact cushion tire lift truck can be particularly important.

⚙️ Production Demands
How frequently the truck handles coils, travel distances, floor conditions, shift schedules, and interaction with production equipment should all be considered.

This is why selecting a 20-ton, 25-ton, 30-ton or 40-ton coil truck shouldn’t begin and end with the number on the coil.

With more than 30 years in the forklift and material handling industry, Nick Marshall works with customers to understand the complete application before identifying the equipment and configuration that fits it.

Have a coil handling application you’d like to discuss?
