If your vehicle pulls to one side on a straight, level road, that is worth getting looked at rather than getting used to.

We say level and straight deliberately, because most roads are neither. Pavement is built with a slight crown so water runs off, and that crown will nudge almost any vehicle gently toward the shoulder. That is the road, not the car. What matters is a pull you have to actively correct on a stretch you know is flat.

Here is why it is worth fixing rather than tolerating.

A vehicle that is out of alignment is dragging its tires sideways a little with every rotation. Not enough to feel as drag, but enough to scrub rubber off. That is why bad alignment shows up as tire wear long before it shows up as a handling complaint, and it is why a set of tires that should last four years sometimes does not make it through two.

It also means you are holding the wheel against the vehicle constantly. On a run out to Longview or down 69 you feel that as fatigue, and most people never connect the two.

And it hides other things. A worn suspension part will often show up first as an alignment that will not hold. If we set one and it drifts back out, that tells us something is loose underneath, and that is the more useful finding.

The Rose Stadium doubleheader is tonight, so Fair Park Drive is going to be busy from about five o'clock on.

Myth Buster Friday: just keep topping off the coolant and the overheating will sort itself out. False. Low coolant is a symptom, and something is causing it: a leaking hose, a bad water pump, a stuck thermostat, or a failing radiator. Topping off only hides the problem until it boils over. Butler Alignment & Brake can find the real cause. Call (903) 593-6687.

Yesterday's trivia reveal: B, about 3 to 4 years, and even less in hot climates where heat wears batteries out faster than cold does. If yours is pushing three years, it is worth a quick test before it strands you.

Now that summer is winding down, it is the right time to have your cooling system looked at. Heat hardens hoses and stresses the water pump and radiator. Butler Alignment & Brake can catch a weak component now instead of leaving you stranded with a hot engine. Call (903) 593-6687.

Myth Buster Friday: if the check engine light is on but not flashing, it is fine to keep driving indefinitely. Not quite. A steady light can be something minor like a loose gas cap, or an early warning of a fuel or emissions problem that gets worse and pricier the longer you wait. A quick scan at Butler Alignment & Brake tells you which. Call (903) 593-6687.

Yesterday's trivia reveal: FALSE. Low coolant is a symptom, not the cause. A leaking hose, a bad water pump, a stuck thermostat, or a failing radiator drained it, and topping off only hides the problem until it overheats again.
