Families who live near Candlestick Beach say the river is like an extension of their own backyards, where generations have fished, celebrated holidays and made memories.

Now, neighbors are worried those traditions could disappear after a permit application was filed with the Oklahoma Department of Mines to allow sand mining on roughly 10 acres nearby.

Residents fear increased truck traffic, erosion and downstream impacts could impact the community.
