Welcome back to school, and back to active school zones! With most schools, like Broken Arrow, starting back this this week, school zone areas will now be in effect again. Keep your speed down and your heads up so you can watch out for those little ones crossing streets and in school parking lots.

School's almost back from summer, but school zone safety begins Monday. When the lights are flashing in a school zone, please reduce your speed to 25 mph and be aware of children and parents who may be walking in the area. Students return for the start of classes later in the week. Stay safe, Broken Arrow!

So you're ready to get your permit, but you're not sure where to go and what you need to bring with you when do. Well here is a handy chart to help you out.
To break it down, if you're 15 and complete driver's education program here in Oklahoma, like Green Light Driving School's, you can skip the written test and take your information to any Oklahoma Tag Agency and get your permit that way.
If you decide to forgo driver's education, and you just want to get a permit, then you must be 16 and take the written test through Service Oklahoma.
Either way, you'll need the following too: your original birth certificate, your social security number, and proof of residence. Pair those with either your passing written exam or your completed driver's education certificate and you're on your way to getting your permit. Then, after that, you can prepare for getting a full license!

We’re looking for people who want to work 4-6hrs on Saturday and/ or Sunday. Need to have at least a high school diploma and a clean motor vehicle record. A passion for driving correctly is a plus.

One of the more difficult tasks new drivers have to learn is parking between two cars in a parking lot. It can be tedious and intimidating when you're still learning, but there are some tricks to help make it easier.
First: Make sure you have plenty of space to park, keep at least one car width of space between you and the space you want to turn in to.
Second: Line the front of your car halfway between the lines of the parking space (or halfway between the cars your parking between if lines aren't available).
Third: Turn sharply into the parking spot, and pull in, straightening the car as you pull forward in to the spot.
Do this correctly, and you should be right in the middle of the parking spot!
As always, practice makes perfect. Don't practice till you get it right, practice till you can't get it wrong.

Remember to watch out for people setting fireworks off in neighborhoods, the smoke can cause a bit of a visual impairment and the loud bangs and pops can be quite distracting too! Let this video serve as a quick reminder to get out and check your lights on your vehicles sometime this week and make sure they're all working before driving off. We discovered one of ours had a burned out turn signal bulb today.
Quick preventive maintenance checks lile this can go a long way to ensuring larger problems don't pop up down the road. They're also a good way to keep a ticket out of your possession as well! So be sure to check your lights on your car to make sure they're all working correctly.

What's the difference between the top and bottom picture here? If you said the angle of the driver's arms, you'd be correct. One of our students today was setting themselves up and preparing for their lesson today when it was noticed by the instructor that the student's arms were bent almost 90° to the steering wheel. After looking over where the driver had positioned themselves to drive, the instructor realized the steering wheel was too close to the student and that too needed to be adjusted. So before leaving, the instructor had the student adjust the steering column to better suit the driver by pushing the steering wheel away from them. Thereby giving the student a safe distance between them and the steering wheel. When setting up a car to drive, you want to make sure you have plenty of space between you and the steering wheel to ensure that there is ample room for the airbag to deploy if such a need arises. If you're too close to bag and it goes off, it may not fully inflate enough to do it's job if your in a wreck. So give the wheel some space and keep your hands apart so they don't block the bag either. Remember, "10&2"
