Everybody’s heard, “Check the Carfax before buying a used car”… but here’s a real example of why that matters.
We recently had a vehicle come in where the service history showed something important, the odometer had been rolled back by nearly 100,000 miles before the current owner purchased it.
That’s exactly why reviewing vehicle history is so important.
When you’re looking at a Carfax, you want to check two main things:
First: make sure the mileage is consistent and hasn’t been altered.
Second: look for regular maintenance history. Things like oil changes, spark plugs, and other scheduled services should show up over time.
Now keep in mind, Carfax won’t show work done at home but it will show most services performed at professional shops.
What you’re really looking for is consistency:
• Regular oil changes
• Major services done at the right intervals (like 60k or 100k miles depending on the vehicle)
If you plan on keeping your vehicle long-term, it’s also smart to stay ahead on maintenance like flushing your coolant and brake fluid.
Those services go a long way in protecting your engine, cooling system, and braking system over time.
If you’re not sure where your vehicle stands, we can help.
